Remember yesterday’s post with a little blurb by Wilson Fuqua? The renowned architect talked about how some homes just need the deft, artful touch of an architect to be transformed from ugly ducklings into sleek swans. I like to think that this home at 10830 Hayfield is a stunning example of this idea. Built in 1981, this soft contemporary likely had a muted neutral palette and an unhealthy amount of carpet everywhere.

Since then, this listing from Brandon Stewart has been updated to sleek, chic modern perfection.

Cool concrete floors, a glazed brick fireplace, and wood paneled ceilings and exposed rafters make this home contemporary and edgy, with touches of warmth throughout. It’s listed for $275,000, which isn’t a reach in this market. If you want to really be stunned though, note that this home was listed for $135,000 in 2002, and then $209,000 in May of last year. Incredible! The Lake Highlands address is definitely a plus, which puts this home inside the Richardson ISD boundaries, feeding into Wallace Elementary.

Walk through the bright orange front door in this amazing four-bedroom, two-bath home with gorgeous vaulted ceilings and 1,795 square feet and you’re welcomed by cool, serene floors and walls, all of which give off a distinct modern vibe. Of course, you can’t miss the George Nelson bubble lamps, which add a loft-like feel to the living space. The soft light make this area a wonderful place to hang art, and with the modern concrete floors and low-profile trim, it will feel just like a gallery. The only thing I would change would be the mantle, which would be a bit more appropriate in perhaps a bright white or maybe even metal finish to brighten up the fireplace.

The kitchen is gorgeous and open to the living room. Honestly, this is one of those kitchens where I wouldn’t change a thing. I love the custom cabinetry, the stainless steel appliances are on-point (it would have been a bonus to have a gas range instead of electric, but considering the layout and how difficult it is to sometimes plumb for gas in a remodel, I’m OK with this).

The island is spacious with plenty of room for family breakfast and informal meals, and the counters are gorgeous low-maintenance quartz that mimics honed granite. The galvanized pipe supports both above and below the island are so novel and a neat design feature that adds a little more loft/industrial flavor. The cubby holes under the surface of the island are a great way to store homework and other paperwork to make room for serving dinner. The layout is fantastic, and I love the large glass patio doors as well as the sliding window that opens to an outdoor bar area. This is a wonderful kitchen for entertaining!

The master bedroom is downstairs and it is a gorgeous, open-feeling space. I do like the wall treatment the owners have done, which makes the headboard reach out to the wall and integrates it better in the space. Of course, this room could benefit from a large carpet, because the concrete flooring is otherwise overly cold for a bedroom despite its modest size at 11 x 16. There’s another bedroom on the first floor, which would make a great office or exercise area.

The downstairs bathroom serves the master bedroom as well as guests, which could be a turn-off for some people. There’s not too much storage in the bathroom, but there is a custom Elfa closet in the master bedroom, which would be perfect for storing towels and other ephemera. I like that there’s just a shower downstairs, as keeping a tub tidy is much more of a challenge in a public area.

Upstairs there are two more bedrooms, plus another bath. This one has a tub, which is a big deal for me. I still don’t see the bathtub as being an obsolete fixture. It’s definitely an important component to modern life, especially modern life with kids!

The backyard is small, but it’s a total gem. There’s just enough room for kids to run around and for parents to hang out. It would be lovely for a small-to-medium sized dog, too. In fact, this home is great for a family with a pup, thanks to the concrete floors on the first level. What do you love most about this contemporary?
