Swiss Avenue Homes Get New Roofs Just in Time For The Next Round of Spring Storms

It’s been almost a year since that freak hail storm demolished roofs throughout Lakewood and East Dallas, leaving many of the slate and clay-tile roofs on Swiss Avenue in pieces.
Some homes that line Swiss have gotten new roofs only within the last few weeks. It’s incredible, to me at least, that these historic properties have sat with only a blue tarp protecting their interiors from the elements for more than nine months.
Meanwhile, homes throughout Lakewood, Caruth Terrace, and the M Streets have had roofers’ signs planted in their front yards and brand new roofs for months. What gives? Is it demand for materials? Stingy insurance companies? A shortage of reputable contractors?

I agree with Cory, some of the materials, especially slate, will be impossible to match, and so expensive to replace, while respecting the neighbourhood's historical status. This smells like a dispute with insurance companies. I was in town looking at apartment complexes in Old East Dallas and we drove through the neighbourhood, and I was perplexed by the amount of blue tarps on trophy houses within this small area.
That "Freak Hail Storm" did $7500 of damage to my truck. I was one of the few at work that day that didn't have any glass damage. Most cars in the lot did, and about half were totaled. Lots of damage to the roof at work too. The noise from the hail beating the roof of the building made us think there was a tornado. It was one hell of a storm.

Yes it was, Bill, and it did in my roof and skylights over here in Preston Hollow. I replaced the skylights as they were leaking and we had the wedding last fall. Taking my time on the roof looking for the perfect product, best installation, etc. And it did take time to negotiate with the insurance company. Guess I could be one of the trap homes. Anyone have any insurance company horror stories to tell? I have Ace and they have been WONDERFUL! I have heard not such great things about others, however.

And the insurance company said" Read page 57 paragraph 4 sentence 3 that states that if the hail storm is larger than one mile but smaller that 1.5 miles in diameter you the homeowner are responsible for all repairs especially when the home is located in a historic district" If you had read the 400 page contract you would have known you needed a hailstorm addendum clause to be covered by a freak storm. Blah ha ha!

Many of the homes along Swiss Avenue require custom made tile. I have been told the quarry in Vermont that produces much of the slate is very behind. Slate & Tile work is very specialized and Our Company, Bert Roofing, does not install it. There are only one or two in town I would trust if I had a Swiss Ave home and they are backed up.
There should be little to no wait for traditional asphalt composition shingles.
