Dallas has upped its luxury home game in a big way.

It was only a few years ago that Realtors heard Dallas didn’t have the product our new East and West Coast buyers wanted. That lit the fire for a “We will show you,” attitude, and boy, have our builders and architects hit a new level.

When you combine the architectural talents of Richard Drummond Davis with the extraordinary skills of builder Colby Craig, the result will always be the ultimate in luxury home design and construction.

This French Mediterranean was built as a spec. What that means is Craig built his dream home. But then he does that with every home.

“I think about living in every house I build,” Craig said. “I know what I want in a home so I build as if I was moving in. At this level, function is a given, so it’s about detail and, of course, being a good service business and being there for your clients.”

Because Craig had a smidge over an acre to build on, it offered an opportunity to be more creative.

“This is an estate property and despite the size, I wanted it to be a comfortable home for two or 200,” he said. “I also wanted to create gracious spaces that are manageable. Flow is a passion of mine. I’ve been to parties in big homes, and invariably, there was always a dead area somewhere, so I created a circular flow with no dead ends.”

Detail makes the difference in homes of this size and at 12,648 square feet with six bedrooms and seven-and-a-half bathrooms, Craig’s imagination could soar.

“I like walking into a forward design element when you have a traditional exterior because it’s unexpected, so we created a floating staircase.”

Craig loves ceiling treatments, and with 12 feet of height to play with, he could create elegant coffered ceilings in the family and media rooms and a spectacular barrel vault in the primary suite.

Some of that detailing is subtle but makes such a difference. Have a close look at the kitchen cabinetry, where he blended walnut and white finishes. Craig also installed a 60-inch Wolf range and four 30-inch ovens because at this size of home, you can host large functions.

The house includes a home theater with a 120-inch screen, a library, a game room, a fully equipped gym, Savant and Lutron systems, an elevator, and a whole-home generator. But it’s the speakeasy that will truly stop you in your tracks. It’s a dramatic space with a bar and wine vault personalized by the present owner.

You’d think it might be hard to determine a favorite place in a dream home you’ve built, but Craig has found his.

“You know everyone admires the front of the house, and yes, it’s beautiful, but people don’t always acknowledge the back of the house. You get a beautiful view from the spa and pool. It’s my favorite part of this home.

We think it will be yours, too!
