CandysDirt.com: Where are you from?
Todd Terry: Dallas

CD: How did you get into real estate?
Terry: Was initially licensed when I was 19 years old but came full time into the real estate business 17 years ago at age 30. Ellen and I have worked together on and off ever since. Today we are business partners.

CD: With Ellen Terry, one of the biggest names in Dallas real estate after Ebby Halliday herself, as a mother, you must have Dallas dirt in your veins! How has your real estate pedigree influenced the way you do business?
Terry: Ellen has always been an outstanding leader, mentor and incredibly hard worker. In addition to a strong work ethic, one of the most important things I have learned from my mom is that there is something more important than “Location, Location, Location” in real estate and that is “Communication, Communication, Communication.” In other words, don’t get so involved in the day to day details of work that you forget to talk regularly to the clients for which you are working.

CD: Where is home for you in Dallas?
Terry: Midlothian. It’s a bit of a drive but the trees are amazing and you can actually see the stars at night. Nothing like living in the country but working in the city. Best of both worlds.

CD: And you drive a … let me guess, Mercedes Benz?
Terry: I do. I love German cars.

CD: What’s your favorite ‘hood in Dallas and why?
Terry: I have lived all over Dallas, from the Park Cities to Plano. My favorite place is always where I live but I am a big fan of trees and there are great pockets both north and south with great trees. Love the Park Cities, Bluffview, Greenway Parks and Lakewood for that very reason.

CD: What was your best/highest sale?
Terry: Ellen and I sold a $22 million home over 10 years ago. At the time it was the highest residential sale in Dallas. Not anymore.

CD: Likewise, what was your most challenging or memorable transaction?
Terry: I will never tell. This is definitely a business of overcoming challenges. But finding solutions is what we do.

CD: How quickly have you ever turned a house?
Terry: I think we were under contract on the $22 million home in about a week or so.

CD: How much did you sell last year?
Terry: Ellen and I sold over $22 million last year

CD: What have you learned about selling that makes you so successful?
Terry: Be persistent. Get there first. Always be on the lookout for new creative ideas.

CD: If you ever change careers for an encore you’ll…
Terry: I do have another career as an actor. For a long time it was a great sideline job but has gotten busier over the past few years. I have a lead role in a film coming out in October called Beyond the Farthest Star. I’m also fortunate to have a recurring role as the character Ramey on the show Breaking Bad, and to have had the opportunity to work with Larry Hagman on the show Dallas before he passed away. I also have a guest star role in an episode of the Lifetime series, Drop Dead Diva, in October and will be featured in a national American Airlines commercial coming out this year.

CD: Do you have a second home? If so, where?
Terry: No, too busy to get away.
