Highland HouseGuest post by Claire Stanard

At the Town Hall meeting hosted by Jennifer Gates last week, I tried to explain in three minutes why I support Crosland Development’s Highland House project to the large group of neighbors gathered at Northway Christian Church. I was brief , out of respect for the imposed time limits, unlike former Mayor Laura Miller. I am an equally concerned neighbor who lives in the immediate area and have carefully researched the pros and cons of this proposed development.

I support Highland House because if we don’t let this project progress, the alternative will be far worse for Preston Center West traffic and congestion. (more…)

Forget those rich broads — Diane, Lisa, Rhonda, Tiffany and  Desiree. This home is so dang cute, IT should be the star of its own show. We could call it The Real Houses of Preston Hollow. I know when you think Preston Hollow, you think about all the estates lining Park Lane, about Randall Stephenson’s family fortress over on Walnut Hill Lane, and those 7800 square foot McMansions crammed onto the lots east of Preston. But this is the REAL Preston Hollow, before hip roof injections and silicon wall enhancements. Somehow, in 6835 Woodland , you get four bedrooms in 2306 square feet, three baths, formals and a den and no one dies because they only have one en suite bathrooms and don’t have twenty twenty toilets!

This is your typical Leave-It-To-Beaver 1950s cottage, just one block from Preston Hollow Park. The living room has a fireplace and bookshelves, and is open to the dining room for as many Supper Club guests as you’d like. The kitchen is a knock-out with island breakfast bar to the large vaulted ceilinged den with built-in entertainment center. And oh June Clever might have dropped her apron in this kitchen: granite countertops, ceiling height cabinetry, double ovens. Maybe, just maybe she’d have dialed up Ward at work: “honey, the kids are at school, and I’m all alone in this kitchen…” The family room gazes into the landscaped back yard with patio.

And there’s already conflict: it’s on a corner!

June would also have shed those twin beds with this Master: sitting area, dual walk-in closets and bath with oversized marble shower and marble-topped antique chest vanity. There are three additional bedrooms, and hey, this house was ahead of it’s time! One even has an “en suite bath”! Hardwood floors, full utility room, double-paned thermo windows, newer hot water heater and fence, floored attic spaces, electric gated driveway, oversized two-car garage with wall A/C unit — nice touch, and back patio wired for sound. Priced at $439,000. I’ll take TWO! Open Sunday, from two to four.

Jamestown is one of the little secrets of Preston Hollow living: you are west of Preston, but not too close to the Dallas North Tollroad. However, should you need to go anywhere, you can take Jamestown right to Royal, swing right and lickety split you are blinging your tolltag. That’s why this home at 11233 Jamestown caught my eye.

Sure, it needs some work, like a major wallpaper peeling party. I see all that floral and I think granny gowns and The Brady Bunch. But look beyond those florals suffocating the kitchen (and the Formica) and you have a home with great bones. Great classic floorplan circa 1955. In fact, I think a friend raised three kids here back in the 80’s — good juju. Two wood burning fireplaces, three bedrooms, two baths, two dinings, and two living areas. You are at 2023 square feet plus a two car garage. But you know me, know what what I’m going to say: the value here is in this gorgeous,  100 X 160 wooded lot that does not back onto retail, power lines or the Tollway. Told you, it’s perfect. Plus the area is slowly turning over to the newer 5,000 square foot McManses every family craves.

So this home could go both ways: it has fantastic lot value in the dirt, or it could be updated, lived in and loved by a starter family or a lock-and-leave empty nester. Great shopping up at Preston/Forest, or down at Preston/Royal where we have the tinier, jam-packed Central Market. Listed at $349,000 — OMG you are just about getting the house for FREE!
