Architectural Digest has named the Dallas Arboretum one of  world’s 15  breath-taking gardens to visit this season , including it with such horticultural treasures as the Royal Botanic Gardens in London,  the Gardens of the Palace of Versaille,  Butchart Gardens in British Columbia, the Nong Nooch Tropical Garden in Thailand, and  Claude Monet’s garden in Giverny, France. The recognition follows earlier accolades this year, when USA Today listed the Dallas Arboretum as one of the 10 Best Botanical Gardens in the country, and its signature event, Blooms, as one of 10 Best Floral Festivals, too.

Will this new coup further impact real estate prices in the East Dallas area, at a time when home value increases are already on a roll?

Canterview A

Editor’s note: This piece originally ran March 24, 2015, and highlights the gorgeous work of Barton-Graham Home & Design Firm. We subsequently wrote a profile of them here and featured another renovation of theirs here.

If you want to see what an incredible renovtion can do for a house, look no further than the 1960s ranch at 5823 Canterview Dr.

Located near N. Jim Miller Road and Interstate 30 in the Buckner Terrace neighborhood, this 3-3 underwent massive changes during the past six months. When Raymond E. Graham and Casey Barton bought it, the property had been vacant for five years and was a total wreck—they called it “the zombie house.” The duo have been renovating and selling houses together for eight years and own the company, Barton-Graham Home&Design Firm.

Graham and Barton are both general contractors and interior decorators and they didn’t miss an inch in this reno. Their efforts paid off: This house went on the market March 13 and was under contract three days later, for the highest price-per-square-foot in the area. It is listed by Graham at William Davis Realty for $290,000.

The duo showed me some “before” pictures of this house and they are scary! It makes me appreciate their work all the more.

Little Forest Hills CottageTiny houses have captured our collective imagination in recent years. There are countless blogs dedicated to tiny houses, and TV shows like Tiny House NationTiny House Hunters; and Tiny House, Big Living have huge audiences.

The tiny house movement, also known as the small house movement, describes an architectural and social movement that advocates simple living in small houses.

While the Little Forest Hills cottage at 8715 Angora St. is bigger than many at 824 square feet, it’s still in the category. And for Dallas, where the mantra is often “bigger is better,” this is most definitely a tiny house.Little Forest Hills CottageThis cute cottage was built in 1948, with two bedrooms and one bathroom. It has an open floorplan and updates, and a big backyard. Its neighborhood, Little Forest Hills, is a community of almost 1,000 homes on the east side of White Rock Lake, with arching shade trees, friendly neighbors, and eclectic architecture. L Streets HomeThe L Streets are a charming part of Lake Highlands, an area with about 1,050 single-family homes from the mid-1950s and later. It is so named because most street names begin with the letter L, like our Tuesday Two Hundred at 8521 Lockhaven Dr.

The L Streets are roughly bounded by Walnut Hill Lane, Plano Road, Ferndale Road, and Northwest Highway. There’s easy access to Interstate 635, Central Expressway, and the DART Rail White Rock Station.
