We here at CandysDirt.com are still mourning the abrupt, shattering loss of renowned builder Tom Greico

Tom, a Dallas Builders Association Honored Life Director, a CandysDirt.com preferred builder and founding partner of this website, an eclectic Dallas figure, and a brilliant home builder who pioneered modern vision in many Dallas neighborhoods when most of us were just learning what transitional meant, died Jan. 13.

As Phil Crone, Executive Officer of the Dallas Builder’s Association wrote, “Because Tom Greico brought light to every room he entered, his passing is especially difficult to convey.”

For those who wish to honor and celebrate the life of such a wonderful man and accomplished businessman, funeral services have been planned for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30 at Restland Funeral Home.

“It is particularly difficult for us here at CandysDirt.com. I have personally known Tom Greico for years, meeting him early in my career as a real estate reporter,” said CandysDirt.com founder and publisher Candy Evans. “I toured his first homes in Midway Hollow and East Dallas, and heard him describe what he was creating with a passion few home builders possess, probably due to the fact that he was both an architect as well as a homebuilder. There was a methodology to every angle, and nothing was impossible.  Tom had a zest for living and for life, which was translated into his homes. He was also one of the most gracious men you could ever meet. He was naturally happy and brought out the best not just in, but for, everyone he was around.”

John Todd of Elite Remodeling receives the 2018 Hugh Prather award from previous year recipient Donnie Evans of Altura Homes.

From Staff Reports

The Dallas Builders Association has awarded the 2018 Hugh Prather Trophy to John Todd of Elite Remodeling. The award is the highest honor bestowed by the association and has been presented annually for the past 68 years to a builder, remodeler, or developer member who has done the most for the betterment of the North Texas region.

The 2018 presentation was made during the Dallas Builders Association’s Leadership Retreat held Oct. 25. At the retreat, 2017 Prather recipient Donnie Evans of Altura Homes presented the award.

The award was named for the Association’s first president, Hugh Prather, in hopes that his principles would serve as a guide for future generations of builders. It is not meant to be simply a “Builder of the Year,” but something more that reflects credit to the building industry.

Key Residential took on a full remodel of a 90-year-old home and the results are fabulous!

We’re back with another look at the creative problem-solving that Candy’s Dirt Approved Builder Key Residential put in to practice for a home built in 1929. The old brick colonial had undergone multiple renovations during its lifetime and had too much of a piecemeal layout after all the disparate projects.

The goal? To create a cohesive living space with modern upgrades on the interior and upgrade the exterior so it meets the same standards as the revamped interior.

The result? A sophisticated airy plan with vintage finishes that honor the 1920s era of the original home.

Building a home is not hard at all. But for many, it can be overwhelming to think of getting it all structurally sound, then pulling it all together for a flawless, coordinated finish.

That’s one reason why we are so selective with our CandysDirt.com Preferred Home Builders: they are screened and curated, and on our site by invitation only. Most have been building homes for years, and these are the same people we would use if we ourselves were building a house. One of our favorites: Bella Custom Homes.

Kevin Bradshaw knows the difficulty of finding a good home builder. Fortunately, he found a great one: Tony Visconti of Bella Custom Homes, who is celebrating 25 years of custom build-to-suit homes this year.

Like most successful businessmen, Kevin is a discriminating client. The senior vice president of the western division of FM Global, a commercial property insurance company, Kevin has a background in engineering and knows a lot about home building from the beginning. We caught up with him to see how he decided on Bella to build his home in the McKinney community of Craig Ranch Estates: (more…)

You could say that JLD Custom Homes were experts at building houses on Tucker Street. They recently completed their sixth home in this little enclave and it just so happens it is the only home available in Lakewood Hills for less than $1 million. The location is superb given that Tucker Street is a cul-de-sac that backs up on to the Santa Fe Trail, so you won’t have any through traffic. Just a peaceful neighborhood in the Lakewood Elementary School attendance area. With four bedrooms, a bonus room, four bathrooms, and a large backyard, this is a perfect addition to the neighborhood.

Previously, I wrote about the winners of the Dallas Builders Association’s annual ARC awards in the kitchen categories.  Now that we’ve had a little nosh, let’s see the winners in the rest of the house. Missed part 1?  Click here!

While there were nine categories dedicated to kitchens, bathrooms didn’t fare so generously with just four categories.  But no fear, that leaves us some space to highlight other winners!

Chantilly Court by Greico Modern Homes

It’s been a newsworthy summer for Greico Modern Homes. Their homes are featured in Dwell Magazine this month, and they are finalists in multiple categories of the Dallas Home Builder Association ARC Awards. But the awards that Tom Greico is the most proud of are the ones that he was awarded as a student of W.T. White High School.
