Alger Park

It’s not always easy to find a move-in ready home near White Rock Lake for a sensible price point, but this week’s Tuesday Two Hundred is a charming Midcentury Cottage in Alger Park that has been thoroughly updated, and comes with bonus square footage.

The two-bedroom, one bath home has 1,020 square feet of living space, and has been meticulously cared for, according to listing agent Leslie Donovan of Giordano, Wegman, Walsh and Associates.

Established in the early 1950s, Alger Park is a small East Dallas neighborhood with big appeal, just minutes from the eastern shores of White Rock Lake. We’ve found a remodeled midcentury house there that impresses with its sleek style and designer aesthetic.

“What’s really nice is the light and the open feel it has to it,” said listing agent Eve Holder with Keller Williams Realty Dallas Preston Road. “There’s also a midcentury flair, which is so appealing to buyers of all ages.”

Our Thursday Three Hundred at 9739 Cloister Dr. is located in Alger Park on a quiet street near Peavy and Garland roads. Curb appeal is just the beginning — inside, you’ll find hardwood floors, oversized windows, an open floorplan, and custom touches. The low-E windows and roof are new, too. This home has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, two living areas, and 2,141 square feet on one story, built in 1950.

Dallas Weekend Open Houses

The stunning University Park Tudor at 3325 Rankin St. is a thing of beauty, and it’s one of our five featured open houses this week.

The Internet is a beautiful thing when it comes to house hunting. But there’s no substitute for stepping foot in a home and seeing what it has to offer. That’s why we love open houses, and our CandysDirt Open Houses of the Week column was created to bring you an insider’s take on properties you don’t want to miss.

This week, our houses range in price from $389,999 to $1.025 million, and the selection is truly outstanding. You’ll find a range of properties, from a super-rare Pennsylvania Dutch farmhouse-style home, to an Alger Park cottage that feels like a treehouse in the woods. Let us know what you think of our choices, and if you know of any we should feature next week.

Alger Park homes for saleAlger Park in an East Dallas neighborhood you don’t want to overlook. Heavily treed lots, Midcentury cottages, a sense of community pride, affordable price tags, and close proximity to all of the area’s charms are just some of the reasons houses in this area tend to fly off the market.

Today’s Tuesday Two Hundred at 9715 Cloister Dr. is a 3-2 that exemplifies the architectural style and spacious outdoors areas common in the area.

Located just a stone’s throw from White Rock Lake and the Dallas Arboretum, this 1952 cottage charms with well-appointed spaces, and an overall feel of flow and function.

It was listed March 18 by Sandra Breedlove with Ebby Halliday, Realtors, for $298,500.

Alger Park

Alger Park is a wonderful neighborhood in East Dallas—we’ve featured several homes for sale in this area over the past several years. They tend to get snapped up quickly, what with the charming streets, mature trees, and proximity to White Rock Lake and the Dallas Arboretum.

The home at 9933 Cloister Dr. is near Peavy and Garland Roads, a 3-2 with 1,482 square feet, built in 1956. It is lovingly remodeled wth low-E windows, an updated kitchen, open floorplan, new concrete driveway in front, new garage door, an iron-rail wood fence, stamped concrete patio, and AC unit. The owners also replaced the cast iron pipes under the house with PVC, as well as adding a new water heater and upgrading all exterior electrical has been brought to code.

It was listed Feb. 4 by Edwina Dye with Ebby Halliday, Realtors, for $265,000.

Alger Park MidcenturyA brand-new listing caught my eye this week, an adorable Midcentury Modern in East Dallas’ Alger Park. The house at 9832 Mercer Dr. has lots of original details from its 1952 construction, like a stacked stone fireplace, Terrazzo floors, retro kitchen, and vintage tiled bathrooms.

With its open floorplan, two bedrooms, and 1.5 bathrooms, this home feels more spacious than its 1,544 square feet. A wall of windows along the back of the house looks out onto a heavily treed, landscaped backyard. A small covered patio and lots of grass provide great space for relaxation or entertaining.

There’s a broker open house tomorrow from 10 a.m. to noon for this house, listed last week by Cortney Bailey at Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty for $259,000. Better move fast if you’re interested—properties in this great neighborhood move quickly!

9930 Cloister Front

I was telling my husband about this house at 9930 Cloister last week. We drive by it every single day because it’s at the corner of Cloister and Peavy, a street well-trafficked by anyone who lives on our side of White Rock Lake.

This home is rare bird because while some important updates have been done, the kitchen and hall bath are time warps back to 1956, which was when this cute two-bedroom, two-bath home was built. Pam over at Retro Renovation will adore these two rooms, which have original tile and cabinetry, a big plus for any 1950s aficionado, and the bathroom has the original pink tile and a double-sink vanity.

“Maybe we should buy it?” my husband asked, half joking.

“Well, let’s see if it’s still on the market …” I responded, which caused my husband’s mouth to fall open.

Rarely do we find a house in the $200K range that is just a perfect home. A home so cute and sweet that, try as hard as we might, we can’t find anything that really turns us off about this cute little East Dallas cottage, and that’s a mighty big feat!

Let’s talk location, first. This house is inside a highly sought-after neighborhood called Alger Park/Ash Creek that has great 1950s-era homes, many of which are being updated by owners. It’s very quiet as there really aren’t many through-streets, and if you’re lucky, you can find a property that backs up to a creek!

While 9754 Ash Creek doesn’t have a creek view, it does have the cutest little pool in the backyard, tons of covered parking, and is fully updated inside. This adorable three-bedroom, two-bath home is marketed by Ebby Halliday Realtor Steve Davies for $220,000. It’s a good price, considering that this home is move-in ready with a pool!

With 1,416 square feet and tons of outdoor space for entertaining crowds of folks, you’ll feel like this modestly sized home is still a great bargain. That has a lot to do with the way the sellers have opened up the space, removing walls separating the dining area and the kitchen. It’s a great size for a small family, or a couple who wants to have room for guests and an office.

Well, there is just one nit we have to pick, and that’s the placement of the second sink in the master bathroom. It’s in such a strange spot that there’s no way you can hang a mirror in front of it. Honestly, I would have gone a different route to add a second sink, or gone without one.

The backyard makes up for that faux pas, though, with a sizable lawn, great covered patio, and adorable little pool that is just perfect for a dip when the heat of the summer starts to get to you. What do you love about our Tuesday Two Hundred?
