Dallas CASA Playhouses Return to NorthPark Today With Nature-Inspired Design From SHM Architects and Others

Dallas CASA’s 2026 Parade of Playhouses officially opens today and runs through June 7 at NorthPark Center, once again transforming the shopping center into a showcase of one-of-a-kind children’s playhouses created by local architects, builders, and organizations, including a repeat appearance by SHM Architects — all for a good cause.
One of the playhouses being featured comes courtesy of SHM Architects, which has brought thoughtful, nature-inspired designs to Dallas CASA’s Parade of Playhouses for four years in a row. Their 2026 concept, “The Oakling,” continues that theme, and it may be the firm’s most poetic yet. Inspired by the simple but ubiquitous acorn, The Oakling is envisioned as a quiet retreat: a small-scale structure designed not just for play, but for reflection.
According to SHM Architects designer Hila Moyal, the goal was to create “a cozy nook” that feels both protective and light-filled, offering children and families a moment of calm rooted in nature.

The playhouse is wrapped in horizontal wood slats that radiate outward, echoing the natural geometry of an acorn. These slats, donated by Delta Millworks, create privacy at the lowest level while gradually opening upward to draw the eye toward a central skylight. As sunlight filters through, shifting shadows move across the interior throughout the day, reinforcing a sense of connection to the natural environment.

Wood takes center stage as the primary material, a deliberate choice intended to help the playhouse blend seamlessly into its surroundings while emphasizing warmth, texture, and craftsmanship. The result is a serene, introspective space that nurtures imagination and an appreciation of nature.
This year also marks a new partnership for SHM Architects with Jim Scott & Sons, a Dallas-based custom homebuilder with deep roots in the community. Founded in the early 1970s, Jim Scott & Sons is a family-owned firm led by its second generation. Known for crafting custom homes throughout the Dallas–Fort Worth area, the builder emphasizes high-quality craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and a collaborative process — values that align with SHM Architects’ design philosophy.

While it’s their first time teaming up on a Dallas CASA playhouse, SHM Architects and Jim Scott & Sons regularly collaborate on residential projects, making The Oakling a natural extension of an already-established working relationship.
Beyond the design itself, SHM’s continued participation reflects a deep commitment to Dallas CASA’s mission. “Our team is passionate about Dallas CASA’s cause,” Moyal said. “We love the opportunity to support kids in the foster care system while also creating something beautiful for a family to enjoy.”

Each playhouse helps raise critical funds for Dallas CASA, the largest volunteer advocate organization for children in foster care in Dallas County. By merging creativity, collaboration, and purpose, SHM Architects’ The Oakling stands as a reminder that even the smallest structures can make a meaningful impact.
