On the Job With the Home Inspectors: See What They See
Share News:

When most people are asked what they do for work, they can give a basic rundown that plays out pretty much daily. Most people more or less do the same thing every day at work. Not so for home inspectors. Because when you go into people’s homes for a living, you never know if it’s going to be big or small, old or new, occupied or unoccupied — and then there’s the state of things in and around the home. From unruly pets to gas leaks, live wires to squatters, home inspectors know to expect the unexpected.
Here are a few examples from a day in the life of a home inspector:
Fighting Faulty Fireplaces?
Pretty fireplace, but you missed something! It’s likely these folks decided to take a decorative fireplace and make it functional, but when they DIY-ed it, they skipped the video that shows you have to have a flue to maintain a safe, working fireplace. Otherwise, you could die from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Finding Humor in the Strangest Places
I’ve always said that humor is the best medicine, and after a hard day at work, it’s important to have a good laugh. And if a sink happens to sound like a choo-choo train, why not share it with the world? But FYI, a whistling tap is usually caused by vibrations from restricted water flow, often due to a worn-out washer, high water pressure, or mineral buildup in the aerator.
Busting Myths Left and Right
So there are lots of folks who think that radiant barrier damages shingles. There are an equal number of folks who think that is absolute hooey, and there is no reason radiant barrier should have any effect on shingles whatsoever. Inspector Travis’ video would seem to indicate that there is a negative effect. Research shows, particularly in hot climates like ours, that it is crucial for radiant barrier to be installed correctly and that, in cases like the one in the video, when shingles have shown deterioration, it has been because the radiant barrier has been installed in a way that blocks the ventilation, which causes the shingles to heat. So, do your research if you choose radiant barrier for your attic. Read the reviews and choose a licensed, experienced company.
