Wynnewood North is Hot And This Midcentury Modern Ranch is What You Want!

Wynnewood North has experienced an incredible rebirth over the past decade. In 2012, the Dallas Observer named it the Best Neighborhood in Dallas, and it just keeps getting better.
The neighborhood was developed by Angus G. Wynne Jr. when he was president of the American Home Realty Company. (Yes, this is the same Wynne family that founded Six Flags, and yes, Angus’ son Shannon is the founder of our favorite 1980s clubs and our favorite restaurateur).

Building a self-contained, planned community that is not full of cookie-cutter homes was a new concept in the 1940s. The developers planned the neighborhood around a 27-acre shopping center, Wynnewood Shopping Village. There was a movie theater, post office, bank, grocery stores, restaurants, you name it. It was incredibly successful, and the concept has been copied all over America.

Despite the shopping center falling into a sad state for many years and many of its buildings being demolished, it has once again become the vibrant center of the neighborhood with a 111,000-square-foot Target about to open. Of course, that is a magnet for new tenants.

So now that you understand this vibrant neighborhood is definitely a place to live, we are going to help you find a house! Let’s remember the era when homes were being constructed here. We are talking late 1940s and 1950s. The Midcentury Modern style was upon us and these homes were built so well, they are still standing and much sought-after today. Architect Roscoe DeWitt is responsible for the design of the neighborhood and DeWitt Circle is named for him. In fact, all of the streets here are named after Navy commanders, ships, and battles.
Dave Perry-Miller’s Eugene Gonzales just listed this completely updated Wynnewood North Midcentury Ranch on Mayrant Drive, named for the USS Mayrant.
DeWitt was a well-known and highly prolific architect in Dallas. Along with Mark Lemmon, he designed Woodrow Wilson High School, Sunset High School, and Highland Park Methodist Church. He was part of the design team with Arch B Swank Jr., working on Stanley Marcus’s private home and two Neiman Marcus stores. So you have a real piece of history in this Midcentury Modern ranch.

The kitchen in this home is what caught my eye first. That millwork is exactly what we want in a Midcentury Modern home, and the updated stainless steel appliances set it off beautifully. The wood accents continue through the 1,644-square-foot house, creating a beautifully cohesive feel. There are three bedrooms and two bathrooms and best of all a pool and a large backyard. I mean, seriously, how often do you find an updated, move-in-ready, architect-designed home with a pool?

If it’s already snagged, you need to get on Gonzales’s shortlist because he’s listing the best properties in Oak Cliff. This Wynnewood North Midcentury Modern ranch at 406 Mayrant Drive is available for $600,000.
