Brettonwoods

Brettonwoods is one of those hidden gem neighborhoods that offers a unique blend of country charm and city convenience. Just a 15-minute drive from downtown Dallas, it’s a picturesque haven with its winding, tree-lined streets and Midcentury homes, all at attainable prices. It’s such a cool place that two homes on this very street were included in the Heritage Oak Cliff Home Tour last year.

According to Heritage Oak Cliff, Brettonwoods was part of the Overton farm and was not developed until the early 1950s. And how much fun does it sound to have an alpaca in the ‘hood?

Despite the growth surrounding it, Brettonwoods has maintained its country and eclectic lifestyle with Crow Creek and its environs still providing home to numerous farm animals, including chickens, goats, and even an alpaca.

Brettonwoods is like a little slice of heaven, and that’s exactly what Lisa Oldham was looking for 11 years ago. She’d lived in both Oak Lawn and East Dallas over the years and was looking for a quiet, peaceful neighborhood that felt like the countryside. When she spotted this 1963 Midcentury ranch on three-quarters of an acre, she was intrigued. Add in the bonus that it had been completely remodeled and updated by Brian Gream, and she knew she was home.

“Brian did such a great job,” Oldham said. “He gutted it and captured the garage space for a principal suite, so it’s huge. He went all out, adding in top-of-the-line appliances and hardware. There are also tons of closets. The house is light, open, airy, and energy efficient. It’s a cool house, and it just feels good.”

A great house is essential, but what’s even more important are the neighbors.

“I love my neighbors,” Oldham said. “The sense of community here is great, especially if you are living on your own. It’s very safe, and everyone looks out for one another. We even have a wine get-together every month!”

Brettonwoods is, as I mentioned, close to downtown Dallas and the Bishop Arts District, but it’s also close to more nature than you can imagine. The home is only 10 minutes from Five Mile Creek, the Oak Cliff Nature Preserve, and Mountain Creek Lake. So, nature is truly at your fingertips here.
