I could have titled this article “Pool Maintenance for Dummies” as being a dummy is how you get a pool that looks like the image above, am I right? Once you let algae in your pool, boy howdy, that’s a regret you don’t want to repeat.

Since it’s almost the first official day of summer and we’re already spending as much time as possible poolside (if you have a pool), you should be in full maintenance mode. The more use your pool gets, the more it requires maintenance. Here are a few tips for pool maintenance from the home inspectors to help you out this summer:

Pool Maintenance 101

1. Check Your Pool’s Pressure: This should be part of your weekly pool maintenance routine, and you should do it more frequently if you’re using your pool every day. Normal pressure for most pools is between 10-25 PSI. If you have high pressure, you probably have a dirty pool filter. If you have low pressure, it could indicate a blockage in the system somewhere before the filter.

2. Check Your Pool’s Filter: In general, pool filters need cleaning every 3-4 months, but North Texans know this is just not the case this time of year. Frequency of usage, storms, pollen, and other environmental factors can contribute to the filter getting dirty much more quickly.

3. Check Your Pool’s Electrical System: In the video, Inspector Alex notes that the pool’s equipment doesn’t have a bond line. A bond line is the pool equipment line that connects the pool to your electrical system. You want that line to be bonded and clearly marked for safety and ease of servicing.

As you can imagine, it’s not a great idea to have anything to do with electricity not perfectly safe and secured if it’s around water. Check all your components and make sure you don’t have any loose or uncovered wires. Being outside, sometimes these wires undergo normal wear and tear in the weather and need to be replaced over time.

Pool maintenance isn’t the best part of owning a pool, but it is a necessity, and it will keep your pool safe, sparkling, clean, and the life of the party all summer.
