They say you can never go home, but apparently I can because Phillip Murrell’s newest listing is just a few blocks from where I grew up, and I am here to tell you it’s a fabulous place to live. When I say “newest,” let me first clarify that 4408 Laren Street in North Dallas hasn’t hit the MLS as I write this, but by Wednesday morning, this listing is HOT off the MLS.

This fresh new listing in my old neighborhood is this week’s Highlight Home of the Week, sponsored by Lisa Peters, Senior Loan Officer with First Horizon. Just a tip: our Highlight Homes have a tendency to go quickly (not to toot our own horn…toot-toot), and this one is no exception so be ready to click that link at the end if you’re looking.

The Perfect Summer House

I won’t bury the lede by putting this amazing backyard oasis at the end, especially not when it’s right where everyone wants to be this time of year. This is the perfect summer backyard, with not only a sparkling redone pool, but miles of beautiful green yard for playing. This would be a great yard for an epic playhouse, soccer nets, or even a pickle ball court. I especially love the central covered patio, which just feels like a lovely spot to cool off and watch the kids play.

A Great Family House

It’s very rare to find a home in this area that has the combination of features that you find in this home. It has the big, corner lot (almost a third of an acre) with a pool, on a quiet street, a 3-car garage, and updated kitchen and bath. When I spoke to listing agent Phillip Murrell of Compass Real Estate about the home, he said, “The home is more than the sum of its parts — there’s something special about this home that comes from the love that’s gone into it.”

The Perfect Location

With a location extremely close to the private school corridor, parents looking to send the children to schools like Hockaday, St. Marks, Greenhill, Jesuit, or the Episcopal School of Dallas would have a very short commute.

Down the street is the Town North YMCA, where generations of North Dallas children have learned to swim, attended camp, and join the swim team. Also walkable for days when social swimming sounds like fun, is Glen Cove swim club, a neighborhood treasure (and where I whiled away many a summer day in my youth).

The Perfect Layout

When you enter the home, everything is beautifully appointed with attention to detail everywhere you look. There’s a grand, welcoming entryway with sleek engineered hardwood floors that span the living space at your feet, and gorgeous architectural details at the ceilings.

So many of the Ranch-style homes built in the 1960s and ’70s in North Dallas have this layout, with a formal dining room to the right of the entryway and a formal living room to the left. I had a friend growing up whose formal living room had plastic on all the furniture in the formal living and perfectly straight vacuum lines in the pristine white carpet that we were not allowed to mar. Many were the days when we’d go running through that room only to have to hastily try to rub out our footprints before her mother came home.

Not the case in this bonus living space! This friendly room has clearly been used as a playroom, but could easily be transformed into a light, bright office or sitting room. The windows on the street and front yard are a special highlight in this great space.

The main living area opens up beautifully, with vaulted ceilings, sliding glass doors to the patio, and a seated bar into the kitchen. The cozy fireplace is a centerpiece on cold days, and new lighting creates ambience every day of the year.

This kitchen is ready for serious home chefs and perfect for entertaining. The layout of the rooms creates a perfect flow for party guests — again, I know because my best friend’s kitchen had this exact layout, and her mom was the consummate entertainer. The kitchen features two-tone cabinetry, quartz countertops, a 5-burner stovetop, and double ovens.

In my mind’s eye, I am 10 years old, standing in the window of the breakfast room, eating freeze-pops, waiting 30 minutes to get back in the pool.

The primary suite is its own haven, just for adults, and its a special one. Step out to the patio through sliding doors right from the bedroom for morning coffee or a quick dip in the pool. The large bedroom features a beautiful tray ceiling for a pop of architectural elegance. The primary bath has been remodeled in timeless Carrera marble, custom millwork, dual sinks, and an oversized frameless glass shower.

With four bedrooms, three baths and 2,541 square feet, this North Dallas home on a corner lot with a pool and a 3-car garage packs a major punch. Add to that the location, and I don’t think this new listing will last long.
