Eclectic Light Fixtures Make this New Orleans Home a Sight for Your Eyes

As we were remodeling our home in 2007, one of the funniest experiences was shopping for light fixtures. It was a complete remodel down to the studs, and we needed new everything. The Gusman was able to redesign our kitchen so we could get more space, which is wonderful. He insisted on keeping the original 1940s phone nook. In other words, he really had a good eye for how the entire house needed to look. I, on the other hand, did not.

On a whim, I stopped at a store that specializes in all types and styles of light fixtures. The minute I walked through that door I lost my mind. I wanted all of them.
The salesperson asked me about the square footage of our house. “It’s 1,000 square feet on its good days,” I said.
“You’ve picked out five different styles,” she said.
“Is that bad?” The expression on her face said it all.

So I take the Gusman to the store and show him the light fixtures I like. He started his next sentence with “I love you but…”

Like President Obama, I did not see what the issue was. They were all lovely light fixtures. The only issue is that they were all different.
Well, until I found the house featured in this week’s column I thought I had been wronged.

Located in New Orleans, “a world of privacy and pure imagination awaits once you pass through the unassuming walled and gated entrance into a whimsical courtyard.” Nothing says whimsical like a disco ball.
What I like most about the light fixtures and this house in general is their use of color. Baby, let me tell you, they were not afraid to use color.

A hot pink room with an orange ceiling makes that light fixture pop and then the table and floor lamps match the drapes. Booyah!

My favorite area of this house is the breakfast room and the living room. Who doesn’t love a purple, poofy type chandelier? But in the living room back there, I could see myself saying, “and I like that one and that one and that one…” until I had all the light fixtures my heart desired and just hung them all up in the same place.

I can’t say I’m a big fan of the polished steel drum chandelier but it fits in this eclectic home.

I’m not even sure I know how to describe the light fixture in this room but I know it fits. That is when it hit me that perhaps just this once, in our 30 years of marriage, that maybe, just maybe, the Gusman was right when it came to our light fixtures.
