Celebrate Sleep Day with Crème de la Crème and World’s Priciest Mattress, Hästens

I fell in love Tuesday evening. And I’m not ashamed to admit, I was so captivated that I gladly hopped into bed.
But before you judge, let me explain. The object of my affection is a Hästens sleep system — the most luxurious (and yes, the priciest) mattress in the world. To put it simply, it’s like laying on a cloud.
Turns out, my timing couldn’t have been better — today is World Sleep Day.
Sponsored by the National Sleep Foundation, this global event is dedicated to raising awareness about the critical role sleep plays in health and well-being.

And it seems I wasn’t the only one enchanted by an ultra-premium mattress. Just this week, one of Hästens’ signature check beds was on display at the monthly ASID meeting, held at the Samuel Lynne Gallery inside the Thompson Hotel. Attendees were invited to experience firsthand why these highly coveted beds are considered the best in the world.
Bradley Belen, managing director and Hästens Dallas showroom owner, explained: “It’s all about the construction and layering — how well the materials mold to the body and how responsive they are to your movement. Our beds offer the perfect balance of comfort and support.”
Intrigued, I had to know more about the bed that made a cameo in Emily in Paris and boasts an A-list clientele including Drake, Beyoncé, Angelina Jolie, and Jon Hamm.
Belen invited me to visit the two-year-old McKinney store, an airy, Zen-like space showcasing the Swedish company’s full collection of handcrafted sleep systems. Each one consists of three pieces: a base, middle mattress, and topper, designed to work in perfect harmony.

Prices range from $25,000 for a standard king to upwards of $660,000 for the ultra-luxe Grand Vividus. “Think about it: you spend a third of your life in bed. Your mattress is the most important piece of furniture in your home,” said Belen.
“I would argue there’s no better decision you could make in your lifetime than investing in a luxury mattress.”
The quality is undeniable. Materials are prominently displayed in a clear box — individual pocketed coils, the finest you’ll find in any spring system, and the brand’s iconic hand-teased horsehair, which regulates temperature and creates optimal breathability.
I also learned the check motif is more than just a signature style. It allows mattress makers to position their stitches at perfectly regular intervals, ensuring consistency and durability.

Belen encouraged me to take a test run. “Breathe deeply and focus on how your body feels from head to toe.” And indeed, bed to bed, the experience varies. “As you move up in price, variables like the height of the springs, the amount of material, and the length of the horsetail hair all impact the way it feels.”

Of course, I had to try the brand’s pièce de résistance: the Grand Vividus.
This seriously sumptuous bed comes complete with a mohair headboard, poplin piping, stingray skin handles, and a plaque crafted by the same facility that makes Olympic gold medals. And did I mention the chic Louis Vuitton vibe?

The buying experience itself is as pampering as the mattress. “We offer private bed tests where we’ll literally shut down the store,” Belen said.
Still, the question remains: Can we put a price on a great night’s sleep?
“In recent years, the sanctuary of the home has been the living room,” Belen explained. “But since COVID, it’s shifted to the primary suite. Now, builders are focusing more on bedroom size within homes.
“When you realize a Hästens is built to last forever, the step up in price isn’t as significant as it may seem. If you have the capacity to make that investment, you’ll be wildly rewarded by the quality of sleep you’ll experience.”
The Hästens Dallas showroom, located at 4433 McKinney Avenue, is open Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
