Oak Lawn Heights Tudor

You need to see this 1928 Oak Lawn Heights Tudor today. It’s just about the cutest house I’ve seen in a month of Sundays. This little neighborhood has been gaining attention for some time now, and it’s with good cause.

Although it’s considered the largest single-family neighborhood in Oak Lawn, it’s not very big. The neighborhood is only a handful of streets tucked just between Cedar Springs, Maple Springs, and Parkland Hospital. Obviously, location is an important factor here. If you need to be in the medical or design districts, you cannot be better situated than in Oak Lawn Heights. The neighborhood is a five-minute drive to Love Field airport and two blocks to a Dart station. You can also walk to the best burgers in town at Maple and Motor.

When I see a house this cute, the first thing I do is look at the 360-degree street view to see what’s next door and across the street because I think neighborhood integrity is important. Although there is a mix of ranch, cottage, some midcentury moderns, and a new build or two, this particular street is mainly filled with cute 1920s cottages.

The neighborhood has always been attractive to creatives. In 1949, Dallas architect Harold Prinz built an award-winning midcentury modern home that was featured in Better Homes and Gardens magazine. Interior designer Javier Burkle chose a 1940s cottage in the neighborhood several years ago to house his design firm, Burkle Creative.

When I dove into the Dallas Morning News archives, I found this was the home of Lee and Lucille Funk. Mr. Funk became the Dallas fire chief in 1933 while living in this Oak Lawn Heights Tudor. When the Funks moved on, the pharmacist at Maple Avenue Pharmacy lived here in the 1940s.

This Oak Lawn Heights Tudor cottage has been well-loved. The owners have kept the eclectic charm and installed all the necessary modern conveniences. There are authentic bowling alley wood floors, stained glass transoms, and beautiful dentil moulding. The kitchen was fully reimagined and that may be the cutest laundry room in the neighborhood.

The home has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, but the attic space was cleverly converted into a loft to accommodate a third bedroom.

What will seal the deal for anyone right now as we head into 80-degree spring weather is the backyard. An outdoor kitchen, pool, and hot tub ensure a very happy and comfortable Texas summer experience.

The garage is also adorable and does double duty, transforming into a pool house.
