Vickery Place

The home at 5643 Vickery Blvd. is an interesting example of what can be accomplished when homeowners look to modernize a historic home with an eye toward preservation. Rather than tearing down the home, in 2009, the owners chose to build on the original design to suit their needs while still maintaining the character of the home and the neighborhood. The subsequent owners continued that transformation, and the results are truly stunning.

We think you’ll agree when you take a look at this week’s Highlight Home of the Week sponsored by Senior Loan Officer Lisa Peters of First Horizon.

Location, Location …

Vickery Place

Vickery Blvd. is in the heart of what people think of as the M Streets, lined with lush mature trees and historic homes. The home itself is steps from Greenville Avenue, and within walking distance to favorites like Terilli’s, Sister, Halcyon, and more! Walk to the salon, shopping, coffee, and plenty of dining. I say people think of the area as the M Streets, but technically Vickery Blvd is part of the neighborhood known as Vickery Place, which is a conservation district.

One of the earliest “suburbs” to be established, Vickery Place was platted in 1911 and is significant today because it retains one of the largest collections of early 20th-century houses. Only a few neighborhoods in Dallas have homes from this era, and of those, few have the high degree of historic integrity seen in Vickery Place.

A Whole New Craftsman

Vickery Place

If you’re going to live in a Craftsman, it’s all about the front porch life, and this one is definitely living its best porch life. The level of detail in every aspect here, from the elegant restoration, to the paint colors, to the beautiful stone bases, gives you an excellent taste of what’s to come inside.

Stained oak hardwood floors usher you into the first of two living spaces. Cozy up to the gas fireplace and set the mood with designer light fixtures like this stunning piece. Note the museum finish walls and double crown moulding throughout that add an extra layer of elegance.

The open dining and kitchen area is set up for everyday ease and entertaining excellence. And access your outdoor living space through huge floor-to-ceiling glass doors right in the kitchen.

Let’s talk about this kitchen. “I think the kitchen is one of the most remarkable aspects of the house. It has top-tier everything,” said listing agent Phillip Murell of Compass Real Estate. “The pantry has its own refrigerator and a separate sink. I can picture someone with a large family, and the kids all coming home for Christmas — plenty of room for everyone.

Kitchen accouterments include Dacor appliances, double dishwashers, slab quartz backsplash and counters, and floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. That pantry Murrell mentioned that you see in the image above also includes an ice machine, and just look at all that storage!

The downstairs also includes this amazing plumbed pet grooming station, and an office, which has its own bathroom and could be a bedroom if desired.

The New Addition

Vickery Place

Upstairs we find the portion that was added in 2009. There are four bedrooms, including the stunning primary suite, which you see here, and a home theater, as well as an adorable balcony, which is in keeping with the times of the original home — bedrooms would have had sleeping porches. “This would be the perfect home for someone with adult children who visit. Every bedroom has its own bathroom,” said Murrell.

Here’s a shot of the original home before it was purchased in 2007 (pre-addition) next to the current home:

They really did a wonderful job of maintaining the integrity of the original home, while adding the space they needed. But back to gushing about the upstairs …

The primary suite is built for the person who is ready to pamper themselves at home: the spacious, relaxing bedroom, the closet that is actually built for two where everything has its place, the luxurious bath with oversized frameless shower with custom bench, a rain head, double sinks, and a free-standing art tub. Sigh. I almost forgot my favorite part! There is a secret bookshelf safe room in the primary suite. I need a secret bookshelf safe room.

Before we leave the upstairs addition, I do have to show you the sweet balcony that overlooks the back. Yes, that is an actual fireplace on the balcony!

Outdoor Living in Vickery Place

Outdoor living is a big deal and this one is unique. First, you have this huge covered area you can use as a patio, that is also a driveway for your massive 3-car garage (which is unheard of in Vickery Place). Next, you have a built-in urban garden with an irrigation system and a brand-new shed. Finally, there is a dog run for your pets. Leaving a fairly low-maintenance, yet beautiful outdoor situation.

This home is a wonderful opportunity to buy a spacious, beautifully updated historic home in one of Dallas’ best neighborhoods.

Compass’ Phillip Murrell has 5643 Vickery Blvd. listed for $1,995,000.
