When Allie Beth Allman’s Catherine Wilson listed this Vickery Place Craftsman bungalow, she rightly called it a unicorn.

In our real estate world, a unicorn is a home that is hard to find and highly desirable. This bungalow, with its historic charm, complete updates, and ideal location between Knox-Henderson and Lower Greenville, is a true unicorn. But a word of warning: unicorns vanish swiftly. This one hit the market on Monday. It’s now Saturday. Need I say more?

Vickery Place Charm

Vickery Place is one of the oldest suburbs in Dallas, platted in 1911, although I don’t think anyone would consider the word suburb to be accurate any longer. It became a conservation district in 2006, meaning you are highly unlikely to have something uncongenial constructed next door, which furthers the unicorn status of this Vickery Place Craftsman bungalow.

The Craftsman style of home is one of our most endearing and, therefore, one of our most enduring. The focus on design, function, quality, and livability puts it in a desirability category of its own.

With the hallmarks of a welcoming front porch, ample windows (this one has 23), and built-in bookshelves flanking the living room fireplace, it’s easy to see why they have never gone out of style. They simply work well for any phase of life.

Updates That Cement Unicorn Status

This Vickery Place Craftsman bungalow has been completely updated. Quite frankly, the kitchen sent me thumbing through my Benjamin Moore fan deck. I think it might be Kennebunkport Green, and I’m convinced that’s the next color for my own kitchen. The classic shaker-style cabinets with farmhouse pulls are the perfect choice for a historic home, and the subtle white textured backsplash blends beautifully.

Although the Craftsman-style home was considered the first open-plan home, most of today’s renovations have further opened them up, so keeping things neutral and subtle is crucial.

The third bedroom, presently being used as a home office, overlooks the expansive backyard.

This unicorn has three bedrooms and one bathroom, but remember I said there was a baby? That baby is the back house. I cannot tell you how much the back house is coveted today. Every house needs one, in my opinion. They make terrific home offices when you have little ones because you can really get away and go to the office! Of course, we all have guests, so having a 630-square-foot back house is an enormous asset, and then there is the option to rent it out and create a revenue stream to pay off that mortgage fast!

Remember, unicorns disappear quickly!

Wilson has this adorable Vickery Place Craftsman bungalow at 5323 Miller Ave. listed for $739,000.

Gene, that’s exactly what I call them! Although today, it’s probably not as P.C. as back house lol!
One of the main reasons I bought my own home is because it had a back house. It’s been everything from a home office to a teenage hang-out to a guest house. They are an enormous asset!
