There’s a lot going on in Historic Downtown McKinney says Realtor Valarie Kerby. The longtime resident of the sought-after neighborhood would know as she’s seen the area grow and change over the years.
But lately, it seems that the area is booming, especially as it attracts events such as KHYI’s Texas Music Revolution.
“Downtown McKinney is such an eclectic mix of shops and restaurants. There is something to fit just about everybody’s taste,” Kerby told CandysDirt.com. “Likewise, I would say that the bands playing at the Texas Music Revolution draw people with a variety of tastes in music.”
The event, which runs Friday and Saturday, June 7 and 8, has attracted legendary music acts such as Lyle Lovett and Ray Wylie Hubbard. While these icons are reason enough to come to Historic Downtown McKinney, Kerby says that festival-goers shouldn’t miss out on another event that weekend — The McKinney Garden and Home Tour.
Two Festivals in Historic Downtown McKinney in One Weekend
The McKinney Garden and Home Tour is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 8 and features six adorable homes. Kerby is the chair of the tour this year, and says that, like the Texas Music Revolution, it’s a great event for festivalgoers and families. Plus, it’s a fun way to see another side of the fast-growing Collin County suburb.
“The garden tour will give those visiting from other areas a chance to see a part of these beautiful homes and gardens they would not otherwise get to see,” Kerby said. “One of the reasons people visit downtown McKinney is because of the charm of the historic district. This allows music lovers to get a real feel for just how wonderful our historic district is.”

Kerby’s Personal Connection to Texas Music
While Kerby says she’s thrilled to have people come and experience the charm of Historic Downtown McKinney as they visit the festival, she, too, is excited about the music on stage that weekend. That’s thanks to her parents.
“My father was a fabulous guitar player and singer-songwriter, as was my mother,” Kerby said. “My father played with Bill Monroe, Ernest Tubb, and a band called the Country Cutups in the mid ‘50s.”

Kerby’s father cut his first album in the late ‘50s and went on to play with Ray Price in 1965. Kerby’s parents played throughout East Texas at jamborees and festivals, dazzling audiences with their rendition of Tammy Wynette’s “Stand by Your Man.”
“In my high school years everyone knew steak was on the grill and jam sessions were held at our house until wee hours on the weekend,” Kerby said. “My father, Wesley, enjoyed all kinds of music and attracted neighbors who could play the piano like Jerry Lee Lewis and several others who played the acoustic and steel guitar. Great memories of my childhood!”
So head to Historic Downtown McKinney the weekend of June 7 and 8 to see two sides of town. Come for the Texas Music Revolution and stay to experience the McKinney Garden and Home Tour — you won’t regret it!
