We like to go big in Texas, but when it comes to tiny homes, the Lone Star State is also an industry leader.

A study released last month by Architectural Digest shows that Texas is No. 2 in its offerings of luxury and non-luxury tiny homes, trailing California.

Luxury tiny homes are perfect for those seeking “a snug space to enjoy nature without sacrificing on style,” the Architectural Digest report states.

“While they aren’t extraordinarily common, certain states have more luxury tiny homes on the market than others,” according to the article.

Reporters analyzed data from Tiny Home Builders and Tiny House Listings. Luxury tiny homes were defined as freestanding dwellings for sale at $75,000 or more.

Key Findings On Luxury Tiny Homes

California, Texas, and Oregon have the most luxury tiny homes for sale, but South Carolina topped out with the highest price, $827,000.

The highest-priced luxury tiny home in Texas is listed for $400,000.

This listing in Collin County’s Princeton, Texas features a $75,000 tiny home.

Despite their compact sizes, each of these homes offers a unique blend of luxury, efficiency, and innovation.

“We found the nation’s most expensive tiny home currently on the market in South Carolina,” the Architectural Digest report states. “Priced at $827,000, it spans 399 square feet and is said to blend high-end finishes with an innovative design.”

New York’s tiny homes offered the nation’s highest return on investment.

California has an inventory of 135 tiny luxury homes for sale. Texas has 81 and Oregon has 74.

When it comes to non-luxury tiny homes, Texas also placed second with 252, trailing California with 318. Florida came in third, offering 130 non-luxury tiny homes.

Alabama has the largest average size for its tiny homes, featuring 404 square feet, while a North Dakota tiny home can be as small as 172 square feet.

Tiny Homes in North Texas

In researching this article, Grand Prairie-based HiFAB’s small single-family modular homes immediately came to mind. We love the HiFAB product — but they’re not tiny homes by definition.

Realtor.com defines tiny homes as between 100 and 400 square feet, rarely exceeding 500 square feet. The HiFAB single-family modular homes are about 1,900 square feet, still smaller than a traditional single-family home but not quite tiny.

Tiny homes have increased in popularity over the past couple of years during a nationwide affordability crisis.

Dallas City Council members have explored the idea of using federal grant funds to build a tiny home village to house the homeless.

Popular tiny home builders in North Texas include Indigo River, Sachse-based Decathlon Tiny Homes, and LoneStar Tiny Homes
