When it comes to designing your home, what do you think about first? It’s not usually hiring a professional interior designer. No, instead, you immediately think about that endless list of decisions that must be made. What room do you start with? Who do you need to hire? What colors work in each space? How do you want a room to function? What accessories will make a room feel complete? The number of things to keep track of can take the fun out of any design project. What’s the practical, sensible first decision you should make? Hiring a professional!

A professional interior designer can banish your anxiety and take the stress out of designing, furnishing, or renovating your home. It’s that simple.

We asked two of the senior designers, Julianna Mathers and Debbie Pratt, with ML Interiors Group to discuss why it pays to work with a professional designer.

Professional Interior Designers Help You Avoid Making Expensive Mistakes

Julianna Mathers:  Working with a designer can save stress, time, and money. Often, the design fee is the equivalent of the cost of one major mistake.

Debbie Pratt: Scale and proportion are key. Just because the length of a sofa may be correct doesn’t mean the height and the arm width will work. You might like a silhouette, but that does not mean it will complement your space. Trust must be established in order to ensure your home accurately reflects your vision.

JM: It’s relative, of course, but aren’t your peace of mind and your time worth the investment in a professional interior designer who will guide you through an often challenging, stressful, and emotional process? When you are navigating on your own, it’s very easy to get sidetracked if an item is a good price, whether or not it benefits the overall vision of your project.

DP: Yes, and adding the wrong piece or more pieces into a room does not make it complete. Items often get added because something feels wrong. What could actually be wrong is the purchase made on your own.

JM: And there is the added burden of a client feeling committed to making that item work.

Professional Interior Designers Have Vision

JM:  Professional interior designers have a clear vision because they have experience and talent. That vision is total, from concept to completion. We can see the big picture, and we do not get overwhelmed with the bits and pieces of a project.

DM: That big-picture vision also allows us to foresee any potential issues and then use that information to avoid problems or to create solutions.

Professional interior designers don’t spend time pointing out errors. They educate, explain, communicate, and collaborate with clients to create confidence. If there is still uncertainty with the design, new renderings can provide reassurance. For instance, the kitchen and master bathrooms are often displayed with 3D renderings, which make visualization much easier.

DM: A powder bathroom is a great opportunity for experimental implementation and wow factors. Fear can be a tough obstacle to overcome, but it’s well worth it when your guests come back from powdering their noses, exclaiming, “That bathroom is amazing!” Who doesn’t want to hear that?

JM: We hold your hand through the bold moves because color can be a scary thing, but having a guide will boost your confidence, making your home a true reflection of you, only better!

Translating Your Visions

Even the best communicators sometimes have trouble describing what they see in their mind’s eye and how to blend their vision with their partner’s.

JM: In my opinion, couples have the same end goal but have different styles and different ideas of how to achieve that goal. Let’s say they want a space that is relaxing. Each person has their concept of what relaxing looks like. A professional interior designer can translate each of their visions, find common elements that demonstrate those styles, and create an overall result that appeals to both parties.

Sometimes, it might be difficult to understand why something doesn’t work and to accept that a different option might be the right solution. Trusting in your professional interior designer to identify and explain why a particular aspect isn’t working will ultimately get you that much closer to your desired outcome — a home that makes you happy and comfortable.

Investment Offers Peace of Mind

For some, it can be a bit daunting to spend the money to hire a professional interior designer. But if you think about what you would price your own time at and the fact that it would likely take you twice as long to do what interior design professionals can do for you in half the time, it’s easy to see that throughout the project, there is an enormous savings of time and money.

DP:  Most people’s homes are their biggest investment. Why would you spend all this money on a home and not furnish it beautifully? If your purchases aren’t proportioned to fit your new home, then something won’t look right. People often don’t comprehend a home’s footprint. They wonder why a room doesn’t feel right. It’s because they need someone with the vision to foresee any problems, analyze them, and then solve them.

JM: As the saying goes, buy once, but only cry once. Without professional guidance, there is always second-guessing, a lot of mistakes, and a lot of tears.

DP: There are so many choices out there – it’s overwhelming. A professional interior designer is going to help you make the right decision.

JM: Designers are an investment but they quiet the chaos. The entire design process can take six to eight months but we create a space where you will feel, optimism, clarity, peace, tranquility, and pride for years to come.
