Check Out Erick and Chelsea Sigmond’s Dramatic East Dallas Ranch-Style Home Makeover

Share News:

When we last left off, Erick and Chelsea Sigmond had just listed their adorable East Dallas home with the open floorplan and picture-perfect finish out. That was three years and one baby-on-the-way ago.

Now, they’re in a new home and they just completed their most ambitious remodel to date. And it is, no lie, so freaking amazing I’m doing cartwheels in my living room. It is GORGEOUS. It’s elevated, thoughtful, creative, inspired, timeless, and beloved by all — especially me. Of course, I didn’t live through it. But they’re young. They’re ambitious and they got it done.

Here’s how it all went down. When the Sigmonds first listed their house three years ago with David Griffin & Co.’s David Collier, they had no idea it was going to sell as fast as it did. I mean, I knew. Collier knew. Every Realtor in the city knew, but they were humble beyond measure and didn’t have a full appreciation of how incredible their taste level is.

Now, they had already purchased their current home and were already planning their attack. But the swiftness of that sale left them without a home base for a minute. The new home was a total do-over. It only had one functioning shower and it needed a lot, like a LOT, of TLC. This is one more reason to love the Sigmonds, they were completely capable of overlooking all the flaws to see what could be.

The Most Professional Non-Professionals

The fact that neither one of these two is a professional designer or artist is beyond me because they’re just that good. He’s a strategist at an ad agency, she’s a regional manager at DryBar. But this just in, she’s also available for interior design consultant work because at the end of the day, even Erick will say, it’s Chelsea’s eye that got them there.

Not that Erick didn’t have a huge hand in it. The exterior landscaping both front and back are all his own design. He said the backyard was filled with trees and an abandoned bedframe or two. Now it’s the most perfectly manicured lawn that even survived our latest drought.

Inside, the first thing they did was tear out the pink carpet and tile. Under the tile? TERRAZZO floors. It’s a small patch in the front entry and it’s been brought back to life.

The dining room was huge and directly on the left when you stepped through the front door. It had a swing door into the kitchen, but the placement didn’t make a ton of sense. They sealed off the swing door, added a wall where there was only a counter, and created a very defined kitchen with extra cabinets.

They split that big ol’ dining room and created a home office that could also become a bedroom in the future. In the office, there’s a sliding glass door that goes out to a private porch that’s now fully gated and offers peace, quiet, and an inflatable hot tub. They wanted to have a dedicated suite for guests in the future and this one is better than most Airbnbs.

The kitchen opens to a breakfast area and the living room and what’s that tucked right off on the side? It’s a wet bar. Chelsea said everyone tried to talk her out of keeping it, but she wasn’t ready to see it go. For good reason, too, it’s handy as heck. If you’re in the living room, grab a drink at the wet bar and leave the fridge for fools.

Sometimes Second Choice is The Best

One of my favorite transformations is the secondary bathroom. Chelsea had her heart set on a Clay Imports tile, but alas it wasn’t to be. It added a whopping $9,000 to their budget and we all love the tile, but do we still love it with that many zeros? Nah, brah. Especially when you’re as talented as Chelsea and KNOW there’s a more reasonably priced solution. A simple four-by-four tile in the perfect shade of olive green, skinny-minnie white one-by-three tile on the floor.

Everything is pulled together with the natural wood grains, modern mirrors, and a Schoolhouse Electric light fixture, which was also a pivot. Initially, they were going to add three sconces, but the way the mirrors lined up didn’t leave the room, so the Schoolhouse vanity light saved the day and also stole the show. Those super fun, smiley-face hand towels are Baggu and the shower curtain is Quiet Town.

This leads me to my final favorite question for anyone with style I admire: Where do you shop? Lucky for us, Chelsea and Erick compiled an extensive list.

They love estate sales and vintage shops, Rejuvenation for hardware and fixtures, Quiet Town for shower curtains, Citizenry for those bleached Marfa Chic vibes, Schoolhouse Electric for timeless, soon-to-be-iconic home goods, West Elm, Ikea (you can’t beat that quality for that price), Article for more desert cool vibes, Semihandmade to custom it up on Ikea, Our Place, Big Wall and more.

Throughout their house, there’s incredible artwork sprinkled throughout. A few key pieces are the embroidered art created by their friend, Bonnie Bridges — seriously, they’re so awesome — and original art by friend and amazing painter, Ricardo Ferrer.

Final plug? They’d like to send a shoutout to James and Luis at DFW Improved who knocked it out of the park on their remodel.
