Midcentury modern architecture is one of the most iconic aesthetics in the history of American homes and these days, we can’t get enough of it. These incredible houses are defined by clean lines, minimalist design, oversized windows, and open interiors where fun meets functionality. So, it’s exciting to see a gorgeous midcentury marvel hit the market (even if it’s not technically midcentury-built.)

For this week’s Highlight Home of the Week, sponsored by Dallas mortgage broker Lisa Peters, we’re stoked to show a beautiful midcentury modern-style home situated right between Trinity Groves and the Bishop Arts District. Kent Frederick of Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate has 1652 Sylvan Avenue listed for $1,100,000. This 3,720-square-foot, three-bedroom, four-bathroom home was built in 1970 and actually born of Spanish roots.

“The current owners are only the second owners of the home,” says Kent. “When they purchased their home 36 years ago, the home was a Spanish-style home with arches everywhere. They removed all of the arched windows and replaced them with large rectangular windows and removed the heavy plaster on the walls.”

In fact, they did a marvelous job with this renovation. Upon walking in under a one-of-a-kind porte cochere, you’ll notice the amount of light and space. The multi-level design and beautiful hardwood floors immediately give off the impression of quintessential midcentury style.

This home features multiple living rooms with incredible fireplaces, one of which is a classic stone consistent with the era. The first living room is perfect for relaxing, reading, or watching television. Then, the second living room separates a beautiful open dining area and a spacious wet bar layout.

The kitchen features a simple clean design. It all revolves around an oversized island with an electric range. Entertaining can be easy given the ample counter space and double ovens.

To complete the common areas, there is a perfect flex space right off the front door. Here, beautiful stained glass makes for quality touches and striking design.

The primary bedroom features those incredible open windows Kent alludes to. Here, you feel an intimate connection with nature, light, and fresh air. It’s truly a dream retreat.

Also, the primary bathroom is beautiful with dual vanities, a separate soaking tub, and a glass-walled walk-in shower.

Then, the other bedrooms and bathrooms in this home make it perfect for growing families or those who love to host.

Finally, the backyard is truly unique.

“As opposed to filling in the gunite pool with dirt,” says Kent. “They simply drained the pool and added beams with a subfloor above the existing pool. This created a ‘basement’ and storage room within the confines of the former pool. In fact, you can still see the semi-rounded steps entering the former pool in the shallow end. Also, the basement has a sump pump and is climate controlled for storage or it can even be used as a wine cellar.”

The current owner was an artist and is responsible for creating incredible metal sculptures which accent the backyard. In creating this midcentury masterpiece, it certainly took an artist’s eye and we can’t wait to see whose hands it ends up in from here.
