Winter Home Repair Tips That Should Go Without Saying

Share News:

Preparing for winter weather is no joke. Fix those leaks, check your HVAC, and get ready for winter.

There is some advice that should be so obvious that it should go without saying, like “Don’t play in traffic,” but overwhelming evidence tells us that when it comes to home maintenance, lots of people are oblivious. So here are a few things that we shouldn’t have to say, but we will anyway.

We don’t know who needs to hear this, but …

… if water is leaking, you should fix that.

You will never see in a home inspection or repair report, “It is recommended that a half-gallon milk jug be placed under the drain pan outlet to prevent water from leaking to surrounding areas.” You should, in fact, repair the water heater. Or anything that is leaking water.

… take a look at your HVAC equipment once in a while.

If it’s literally falling apart, it’s safe to say you haven’t been having regular HVAC service. It’s very expensive equipment that needs maintenance. Oh no, indeed.

… painter’s tape is not an acceptable repair material. For anything.

Don’t let a temporary fix become permanent. Sure, if you have a leak, plug it up with whatever is handy, but (again) go ahead and fix the thing that’s broken. Winter is a very good time to seal up gaps in faucets and drains with caulking (not painter’s tape).

… don’t ignore termites.

The longer termites infest your home, the more damage they can do. In this video, these little guys have had a long time to build a tunnel that strong. And don’t think because it’s winter you don’t have to worry. Unlike other common pests, termites don’t rest when winter rolls around. Subterranean termites are especially dangerous as they eat 24/7 and thrive underground — i.e. your home’s foundation. Termites don’t hibernate, but they do prefer warmth, which is why they tunnel deeper and cause more damage when it’s cold outdoors.
