Think You’ve Seen it All? These Homes Are Certified Hot Messes

Every week, the detail-oriented folks at Green Scene Home Inspections will give CandysDirt.com readers an education in inspection. Want to see what they see? Tune in for “Upon Closer Inspection.”

As home inspectors, we see a lot of the same kinds of issues that arise with most houses. This week, we thought we’d share some inspection finds that really stood out.

Nothing To See Here

At one particular inspection, the owner had provided a report from a foundation engineer that said the foundation was in good shape. In the photo above, you can see an active water leak and badly damaged beams in the crawl space under a hydro tub.

Make sure your home inspector inspects the crawl space — this foundation is not in good shape.

Um…

Is it a chimney cap or a secret oven? A combination smoker/chicken coop? SERIOUSLY WHAT IS THAT FOR?

Want to turn off the fireplace? Just put on the glove to reach into the actual fire.

Seems Reasonable

Here, the Inspector couldn’t find the key to test the fireplace, so he asked the listing agent how to turn the gas on. The agent informed him there is no key, you turn it on at the valve in the fireplace, and she left a glove because you have to reach through the fire to turn it off.

It’s Not Important Until It Is

Most people know to check their inside dryer vents, but don’t know to check the other end. This dryer vent is so clogged it’s disconnected from the wall.
