City of Dallas Revisits Certificate of Appropriateness Fees For Historic Districts

Maintaining and renovating a historic property can be extremely expensive, especially considering the high cost of materials.

So it’s no surprise that homeowners with properties within a historic district are sometimes tempted to skip the additional expense of securing a certificate of appropriateness (CA) from the city when looking to save money.

That’s one issue that the City of Dallas hopes to address as it revisits the fee schedule for certificates of appropriateness. How can obtaining a CA become more affordable so that homeowners are less likely to skip the process?

The following are the recommended fees subject to Dallas City Council approval on Sept. 22:

1. Certificate of Appropriateness (CA) (Type “A”) $ 100

2. CA (Type “B”) – New Construction $ 500

3. Certificate for Demolition (CD) or Removal $ 400

4. CA/CD or Removal (Unauthorized Work) $ 600

Routine maintenance CA requests would not incur a fee.

At the meeting, the fees will be explained as well as how they will apply to different CA applications. There will also be a Q&A and comments will be taken.
