Texas Gains 100K New Residents From Other States, According to Report

Texas gained roughly the population equivalent of the city of Allen based on the Texas Relocation Report released by Texas REALTORS®.
The report, which analyzes the latest available migration data from the U.S. Census Bureau and U-Haul, determined that the state netted approximately 100,000 people in 2019.
According to Census estimates, Texas added 537,000 to 582,000 incoming residents in 2019. The Census estimated outgoing residents numbering between 435,000 to 471,000, yielding the 100K net gain.
Texas also gained 192K to 220K residents from outside the U.S. in 2019.
Add in the outside-of-the-U.S. residents, and Texas gained a populace of 320K, about the size of a Corpus Christi.
“Once again, Texas welcomed more than half a million new residents from other states,” Marvin Jolly, Texas Realtors chairman, said in the report. “Some move here for a lower cost of living than where they’re from, a great quality of life, diverse job opportunities, good weather — there are many reasons people continue coming to Texas.”
The state ranked behind California for the number of outgoing residents. However, the number of Californians moving to Texas about doubled the number of Texans moving to California.
Texas attracted more than 500K new residents from out of state for the seventh consecutive year. This year, the new Texans came mostly from California and Florida. The list also includes newcomers from Louisiana, Illinois, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Georgia, and Arizona.
Texas exports ended up California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Florida, and Georgia.
From 2014 to 2018, the top Texas counties for incoming residents include Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar, and Travis. On a metro level, the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington MSA and the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land MSA had the highest numbers of incoming residents.
On a city level, Dallas ranked 18th for top U-Haul designation cities. Fort Worth was 25th and Plano 27th. Houston was first.
“Though we don’t have 2020 relocation statistics yet, increased remote-work opportunities and company relocations continued to fuel moves from other states to Texas during the pandemic,” Jolly said in the report.
Texas was among the top five destination states for corporate moves in 2020, according to Chicago-based Allied Van Lines’ annual Magnet States Report.
The top corporate move destination city is Houston for the second year in a row. Austin ranked the top consumer move destination city.
