Best of 2020: Historic 1915 HP Home of Billboard Advertising Mogul Tells Fascinating Story

Editor’s Note: This year has been a decade, right? So many things happened, lots of things were postponed, and houses continued to sell despite it all. While the CandysDirt.com team takes a hot minute this holiday season to recharge the ol’ Energizers, we’re serving up our very favorite stories from 2020. Enjoy!

Shelby: Estate sales are like archaeological digs of the things that make up someone’s life. During this particular dig, I found an interesting and sad piece of this advertising icon’s home.

The estate sale for this magnificent 1915 Highland Park home on Miramar is a doozy, not only because of the impeccable quality of the collectibles, furniture, designer clothing, and jewelry that belonged to a former billboard advertising mogul and his wife but because the historic three-story home by Lakeside Drive is for sale, too.

The nearly 5,000-square-foot, four-bedroom estate at 4012 Miramar Avenue is home to the late Dallas-based founder of Reynolds Outdoor Advertising Mr. George Reynolds III who was a lifelong resident of Highland Park, town councilman, and chairman of the Byron Nelson. Those life accomplishments are reflected in the personal effects and style of what’s featured in this estate sale taking place Jan. 10-11, hosted by Dallas Estate Sellers.

Stephen and Jose with Dallas Estate Sellers say this is one of those beautiful historic homes in Highland Park you don’t get to see that often. That’s because Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds have owned the 1915-built home since at least 1994, Dallas County Appraisal District records show. “Our client decided to downsize from their great home in Dallas and chosen to part with some of their most favorite things to make room in the next phase life has to offer.”

Jane Hopkins and Morten Hopkins of Ebby Halliday – Ebby’s Little White House listed the 4,999-square-foot, four-bedroom home with views of Exall Park for $4.5 million in April 2019, a few months after Mr. Reynolds passed. The Hopkinses lowered it to $3.95 million in August 2019.

We’ve selected a few of our favorites and most unique pieces here. Unfortunately, we don’t have prices for most of these items and you have to attend the sale in person to purchase, but that’s all part of the treasure hunt.

The story behind these vintage Highland Park High School Letterman Jackets is fascinating and sad. Mr. Reynolds was captain of the football and track team while a member of the class of 1953 at HPHS. But in 1951, tragedy struck, according to his Dallas Morning News obituary. “At 16, Reynolds was at a high school football banquet, where he was to receive an award, when he was pulled away and informed that his father, who had been en route from Austin to attend, had been killed in an auto accident.”

His son Scott said he became the man of the house and stayed close to home attending college at SMU to help take care of his mother and young siblings. Reynolds’ father was George T. Reynolds Jr., a Dallas architect who designed several architecturally significant homes in the 30s.
