outdoor living

Summertime in Texas means heat, but that heat shouldn’t keep you from enjoying outdoor living.

A comfortable outdoor area should feel like an extension of your stylish indoor living rooms. Using the same color palette and aesthetic tricks the eye into believing you’ve added extra square footage to your home.

Here are some favorite tips from ML Interiors Group for gorgeous, livable outdoor areas:

Determine Purpose

If you have more than one outdoor area, you have options. Perhaps al fresco dining is what you’ve always longed for, or an outdoor kitchen. Lounging by the pool is a weekend essential, and a place for cocktails or coffee is also a must. A designer will see the potential of every square foot and know how to maximize each spot.

Start at the Bottom

An outdoor rug creates definition, and bigger is better. There are plenty of options. You can have a luxurious, dare I say PLUSH, area rug that will withstand the Texas sun and storms, or a simple budget-friendly one you can replace every few years. If you enjoy changing the vibe regularly, simple and economical is an excellent solution.

Maximize Seating and Don’t Skimp on Quality

Invest in quality furnishings that will require little maintenance. There are many material options, including concrete, teak, and porcelain, that work beautifully outside. Make sure there is seating for everyone and mix couches with chairs just like you would inside. For a bit of extra style, install a hanging chair or swing.

Accessorize

Once your foundational pieces are selected, don’t forget to accessorize. Pillows, plants in beautiful pots, garden stools, and even art will draw you outside. Beach resort patios have curtains, so can yours! They will add a soft aesthetic and sun protection. Quality pillows with proper inserts, in performance fabric, will prevent mildew and fading.

Technology

Watch the game from the pool or have an impromptu dance party! Outdoor televisions come in every size, and outdoor speaker systems today are powerful and invisible.

Keep it Cool

Add a fan to circulate the air and allow you to enjoy more time outside. The fan should be the proper size and designed for outdoor use. There are some very affordable and stylish options.

Light it Up

Lamps add ambiance when the sun goes down. Add decorative string lights and bring the resort vibe home with rattan pendants above the dining table. Please make sure they are wet-rated, so you don’t accidentally burn down your beautiful, new outdoor living area!

There’s not a big difference between creating a living area inside or outside, but there are considerations, especially when it comes to fabrics and materials that can stand up to all kinds of weather. Just remember, you never have to sacrifice style to enjoy the outdoors!
