Since many of us are currently stuck at home, it’s a great time to catch up on your home maintenance. Believe us, as home inspectors we know that there’s a STRONG chance that you are not caught up on your home maintenance.

Here are a few things you should be doing this spring to protect your home from repairs, keep it running efficiently, and help maintain its value.

Check Your A/C Filters And Change if Needed

While you’re at it, clean and sanitize the inside and outside of the registers all around your home. You can order filters to be delivered by your local grocery or on Amazon. Let’s breathe clean air while we’re stuck at home!

Test Your Systems Around The House

Test your smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and water heater pan alarms to make sure they’re functioning with working batteries. Make sure you have a working fire extinguisher on each floor of your house, especially in the kitchen. Don’t have any of these things? Order them online!

(Pro Tip: This is NOT an approved water pan. Make sure your water heater has a water pan and alarm in place. This will warn you if you have a leak, instead of a surprise flood.)

Check Your Gutters

Clean out your rain gutters and make sure all downspouts are unclogged and pointed away from your house. It’s the rainy season, and now’s the time for working rain gutters! While you’re up there, trim back any branches that are too close to the roof to prevent roof damage during high winds.

Make Sure You’re Well Caulked

Check out the caulking around all your windows, doors, and exterior vents to make sure they are sealed and not allowing cool air out and warm air in. You can purchase caulk online at Home Depot or Lowes or on Amazon, and here’s a useful guide for caulking windows and doors.
