A Preston Hollow Family Compound With New England Style

Character — it’s what is missing in so many homes today. Sure, we love Agreeable Gray walls with white trim. You cannot go wrong with those choices, but if you want to create a bit of character, color helps.  When we spotted this Preston Hollow family compound at 5134 Kelsey Road with some bold color statements, we were smitten. After all, when you’re trying to sell a house, you want potential buyers to remember it, and they will remember this one. It’s not only filled with character and color, but it’s  also tasteful, stylish, completely updated, and move-in ready. Even at $2.65 million, we see this one moving fast.

The house has just a little history. If you’ve grown up in Dallas, you’ll have heard of the original owner. If not, you should at least read about him because he’s an extraordinary fellow. In fact, his entire family is extraordinary. Carr P. Collins Jr. had this Preston Hollow family compound built. He also founded Mayflower Estates, the subdivision within Preston Hollow where he built the home in 1955. During his lifetime, Collins was a businessman and a diplomat. He commanded the United States military escort for the Japanese surrender delegation at the end of World War II. His brother was Congressman Jim Collins and his sister, Ruth Collins Sharp Altshuler, continues to be an influential and revered Dallas philanthropist. We can only imagine the gatherings at this spectacular home.

So, what’s a family compound? Think the Kennedys and Hyannis Port.

The home is laid out around the pool and sits in the middle of a sweeping lawn. A gated brick car park links the house to a full guest cottage. There’s a beautiful pool pavilion with a private bath, formal gardens, a gated kitchen garden, a four-car garage, and a large shaded play area — all creating the feel of a New England family compound.

“It’s not something you see in this neighborhood,” Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s listing agent Susan Marcus said. “The proportions are exquisite, and the grounds are spectacular.”

There are six bedrooms, five bathrooms, and two powder baths in the 6,604-square-foot home set on almost an acre of land.

The home has not only been beautifully maintained and updated over the years, but the owners have a clearly defined style that we love. It’s nice to see risk-taking today when it comes to paint color — and no, we don’t mean a red dining room. There is plenty of white to balance out this home, but color is used very effectively to define space. The moment you see the fresh green and white wallpaper in the entry, you know you’re not in an ordinary home. Once you enter the deep teal study, you may never want to leave. Perfect punches of color have been used throughout, from the serene lavender of the guest room to the bright blue tiles in the master bathroom, it’s just an excellent use of color. And if you still want Agreeable Gray walls, it’s a quick fix, but seriously, banish that thought!

“It’s not just another house,” Marcus said. “It’s an exquisite family compound.”

We could not agree more.
