Cliff May was an midcentury architect known as the father of the California ranch home. These houses were created for the sunny and warm days and nights, with large expanses of glass to minimize the lines between indoors and outdoors. Most rooms in a May-designed home have a wonderful connection between these spaces.

We are lucky in Dallas to have quite a few May homes, which will be part of the Casa View Cliff May Home Tour Oct. 15 in East Dallas’ Casa View neighborhood (we’ll be writing profiles these houses in the coming weeks). The Greater Casa View Alliance is spearheading the home tour to show off May homes and bring attention to the significant architecture of the area.

In the neighborhood, we’ve found the newly listed midcentury modern at 2508 Andrea Ln. It’s not part of the October tour, but it’s a beauty. This is a classic MCM design, with original clerestory windows, a low-slung roofline, open floorplan, and incredible views to the landscaped backyard with custom wrought iron fencing.

This home has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and 1,337 square feet, built in 1955. Its list price is a pleasant surprise at just over $200K.

Casa View was established in the mid-1950s and consists primarily of single-family homes, small shopping venues, locally owned restaurants, parks, churches, and schools. Casa View was recently named one of D Magazine’s rising neighborhoods for its location, affordability, and grassroots community development initiatives.

This home retains all its original, vintage charm, with respectful updates and modern finishes throughout, including subway and mosaic tile, bowl sinks, and custom privacy shades. The living room, dining room, and kitchen flow together as one great space with pristine hardwood floors, walls of windows, and a white Roman brick fireplace.

The kitchen is modern and updated in a way that works well with the home. It offers white, flat-front cabinets, contemporary hardware, lots of storage, a large island, and white appliances.

The backyard is carefully designed to reflect the midcentury aesthetic of the home, with grassy green space, concrete pavers, mature trees, and new landscaping. There’s also a detached one-car garage.

This MCM home was listed Sept. 9 by Rob Elmore with Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate for $210,000.

A little yard TLC, plus that rough looking driveway are the only things I’d tend to on this house. This is a nice (and rare) mid-century modern bargain for Dallas! I find it really interesting that 3 Cliff May homes on that street have hit the market in the last month.

Sean M. What are you talking about “a little yard tlc”?! The yard is amazing. Do you mean replace with water-guzzling grass?

That’s my old house! It was a great house when we updated it and we were sad to leave it. I believe that one of the previous owners is who bought it from us, so there’s a lot of love there. Great neighborhood with wonderful people.

    Don’t miss the hidden washer/dryer!
