The buzz in Kennebunkport this summer is, once again, the Bush family. They are well loved in these parts. Not only have they had a busy summer of birthday parties and a trip to Maine Medical in Portland, in May the Boston Globe broke the story about a 3,000 square foot “summer cottage” being built for the Jeb Bush family at Walker’s Point just as he commences his presidential campaign:

Jeb Bush, who has a longtime relationship with this seaside town where generations of Bushes have vacationed, is having a house built for him at the family compound on Walker’s Point, with a wraparound porch and expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean.

The home, on a 1.3-acre site assessed by the town at $1.4 million, was initiated for him by his mother and father, who have tried to preserve the family ties to the picturesque property.

At 3,000 square feet, the home is large but not gigantic –believe me, there are much larger homes being built along this coast. Jeb will have four bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms, and the typical New England shingle siding and a gabled roof. When completed this month, the home will be the second largest at the compound. The summer cottage is being built for about $600,000. Barbara Bush is said to be dictating most of the design and construction input, which is said to be quite simple, allowing Jeb and his wife to select interior finishes.

“I’m incredibly blessed to be George and Barbara’s son and am thankful that they have built a special place for their family to gather,” Jeb Bush said in an e-mail. “We are so lucky.”

Here you can be just a few miles away from the Bush compound with this Cape Arundel estate for less than $2 million and have your own family compound. And guess how far you are from the Atlantic? A whole  750′ feet! The home is a stunning traditional New England design built in 1998 that is privately tucked away on 4.19 acres. You get all that land plus 4,870 square feet of Dallas-style luxury living, four bedrooms, three full baths (it’s really OK to share because there are four half baths) CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING (rare here) and even an elevator! Of course, on 4.19 acres you will be able to build one, maybe two more  summer cottages for your kids. As a friend up the beach told me at dinner Saturday night: sometimes your parents get tired of changing the sheets. That’s when you know it’s time to build your own beach cottage.

It’s about 2 miles away from Dock Square on Ocean Avenue, which means you could don some good walking shoes and walk to dinner or Bush watch. The Cape Arundel Golf Club (where Jeb plays) isn’t far, either. And with another Bush in the White House… property values can only head as high as the surf. Listed with Boston broker Jason Sapphire for $1,975,000.

Off to my last walk on the beach before heading home…
