Window Air Conditioner

Does that window air-conditioning unit make you an easy target for burglars?

Well, the new version of the Dallas Police Department’s incident reports are sorely lacking in interesting information. For example, we can tell you that a burglar entered a house in the 5900 block of Revere Place, just a few blocks south of Stonewall Jackson Elementary, “through the doggy door” on Aug. 18, but we can’t tell you what he stole. And on the same day, not so far away, a burglar entered a house in the 6200 block of Velasco Avenue by removing an air-conditioning unit from a window. But there are no details on the loot, which is often the most interesting part.

Luckily, we still have the two Park Cities police departments to give us the scoop on incidents such as this: Between 11 p.m. on Aug. 22 and 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 23, a burglar entered a black 2014 Range Rover that had been left unlocked in the 3800 block of Miramar Avenue and stole a Louis Vuitton wallet — which held $150 in cash and seven credit cards — from a purse. (The victim said she always leaves her purse behind the front seat, for whatever reason.) But the burglar ignored (or didn’t notice) a bank envelope in the same purse that held several hundred dollars in cash. He did, however, take a blue iPod Mini, a white first-generation iPod, and a charger from the console. Poor choices on the part of both the victim and the criminal here.

HIGHLAND PARK

At 12:34 p.m. on Aug. 18, a resident of the 3800 block of Mockingbird Lane reported that a projectile pierced a window next to his front door. The mischief took place between Aug. 8 and Aug. 16, while the victim was out of town. He said he reported it only because of the town’s string of similar incidents.

At 3:54 p.m. on Aug. 18, a resident of the 3300 block of Drexel Drive reported that he’d found BB-size dents in his white 2014 BMW 325 and his blue 2010 Honda Ridgeline. His wife noticed the BMW’s dent on the morning of Aug. 16, but she figured she’d been dinged in the parking lot.

At 4:10 p.m. on Aug. 18, another resident of the 3300 block of Drexel Drive reported that someone had fired a pellet into the side of her silver 2003 Toyota Sequoia. She inspected her vehicle for damage after hearing neighbors discuss the weekend’s crime wave.

At 12:41 p.m. on Aug. 19, the manager of a house in the 4400 block of Beverly Drive reported vandalism to the front door. The damage happened between 5 p.m. on Aug. 16 and 4 p.m. on Aug. 18, when it was discovered by the daughter of the couple who recently sold the house and are moving out. Nothing appeared to have been stolen, so the manager had a contractor fix the door before she called the police.

Between 7 p.m. on Aug. 19 and 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 20, a would-be burglar broke a window on a blue 2007 Lexus ES350 behind a house in the 4500 block of Fairway Street. There was no evidence that anyone entered the vehicle.

Between 7 p.m. on Aug. 21 and 8:10 a.m. on Aug. 22, a burglar entered a blue 2004 Chevy Tahoe that had been left unlocked in the 3400 block of Harvard Avenue and stole a complete set of Nike Ignite golf clubs.

Between 10 p.m. on Aug. 21 and 8:15 a.m. on Aug. 22, a burglar broke into two pickup trucks and entered a third vehicle outside a house in the 4500 block of Westside Drive. An $800 Warthog semi-automatic pistol was stolen from a black 2012 Dodge F2500, and a $650 engine tuner and a $600 GPS unit were stolen from a white 2008 Dodge F2500. The burglar also entered a white 2012 Volvo S60 that had been left unlocked and stole a $500 pair of Tom Ford sunglasses plus a bag holding $250 worth of toys.

Between 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 22 and 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 23, a thief entered a silver 2006 Toyota 4Runner that had been left unlocked in the 4700 block of St. Johns Drive and stole a Toshiba laptop, an REI backpack, an Oakley backpack, a checkbook, and $5 worth of change.

UNIVERSITY PARK

At 10:17 a.m. on Aug. 18, a resident of the 3700 block of Hanover Street reported that a burglar entered his attached garage after 8 p.m. on July 26 and stole seven golf clubs with a combined value of $2,300, plus a $450 NuCast fishing rod.

After 10 p.m. on Aug. 19, a thief stole a $350 Trek bicycle from a carport in the 3400 block of Potomac Avenue.

Before 9 a.m. on Aug. 21, a burglar broke into a white 2013 GMC Denali in the 3700 block of Villanova Street and stole the third-row seat.

At 6:09 p.m. on Aug. 21, a thief stole a $200 Diamondback bicycle in the 2900 block of McFarlin Boulevard.

What’s up with so many dummies leaving their cars unlocked? I get twitchy if I’ve walked more than a few feet away from my vehicle and haven’t locked the door – guess it’s the OCD kicking in.

I wonder the same thing, James.

Me too. Comes from living in Chicago and having my car broken into when I left stuff in it AND locked!

If residents parked their cars in their garages and locked their doors (cars and garage doors) there wouldn’t be much to report in the weekly crime report.

Hear, HEAR! I’m so tired of people filling their garages up with crap to the very brim and then parking their cars outside. Our across the alley neighbor has their garage so full that I get to see it every time they come home. It stinks. Just because it’s in your garage doesn’t mean it’s not HOARDING!
