Curious about Dallas ISD schools? On the hunt for a house? How about a neighborhood that is served by three great elementary schools and two feeder patterns?

Hi. I’d like you to meet Midway Hollow.

shmidwayhollow4110dunhavenOur second-ever SCHOOL+HOUSE features a beautiful new build by Grenadier Homes and is located at 4110 Dunhaven. Our co-host is Karen Cuskey Hartman with the Hartman Terilli Realty Group and Coldwell Banker. And here’s another tip – after you leave our event, drive around the neighborhood and see all the gorgeous inventory available. Don’t see something that’s exactly what you want? There are also some lots available from various builders, where you could get the chance for input before the foundation is poured. Builders in the area include Midway Hollow-resident owned Draper Construction, Grenadier, Bella Vita Custom Homes, Classic Urban Homes, and many more. You name the builder, they’re probably turning dirt in Midway Hollow.

And there are also extremely charming 1950s bungalows and ranch homes for the first-time buyer, so don’t think you’re priced out of the neighborhood.

So drop by SCHOOL+HOUSE tomorrow between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Take a slow meander through the neighborhood on your way out. And, of course, pack your questions – we have all kinds of experts (including Dallas ISD Trustee Edwin Flores, several principals, and a few parents) waiting to answer them.

9708 Lakemont a

When a remarkable and beautiful property hits the DFW market, you’d better have your Realtor on speed-dial.

That’s the case with the brilliant home at 9708 Lakemont Dr. in Northwest Dallas’ Glenridge Estates. It went on the market and was put under contract in three days!

This is a Midway Hollow gem, a renovated midcentury bungalow with an open floorplan and potential for expansion. The design is MCM perfection, and there are lots of era-appropriate updates, like museum walls, recessed lighting, updated wiring, new landscaping, sprinkler system, tree lighting, custom drapes, double pane windows, vaulted ceiling, and storage lockers in the carport.

Built in 1952 and sitting near Walnut Hill Lane and Midway Road, this home has two bedrooms, one bathroom, and 1,130 square feet.

You may be thrilled about pumpkin-flavored everything to hit the shelves, but us here at CandysDirt.com are over the moon about the return of fall home tour season. Yes, we’ll still hit up a Starbucks for our annual pumpkin spice latte, but nothing quite says “autumn is here!” to us like traipsing through other people’s homes with those weird little hospital booties on.

To help you plan, we’ve compiled a list of can’t miss home tours for this fall. It skews heavily toward midcentury modern and covers quite a bit of territory:

SHmidwayhollow4110DunhavenAfter the rousing success of our first SCHOOL+HOUSE event, I immediately started hearing from all kinds of Realtors, families, and schools about picking their neighborhoods.

After compiling a list of potential schools and neighborhoods, I’m pleased to announce that the next SCHOOL+HOUSE will be in Midway Hollow on Sept. 24, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It will be co-sponsored by Grenadier Homes and Hartman Terilli Group/Coldwell Banker.

This Midway Hollow new construction by Grenadier Homes, located at 4110 Dunhaven Road will be the site for our second SCHOOL+HOUSE event.

This Midway Hollow new construction by Grenadier Homes, located at 4110 Dunhaven Road will be the site for our second SCHOOL+HOUSE event.

The three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath, new construction home is at 4110 Dunhaven Road  and features a study, a gorgeous outdoor entertaining area with a fireplace, and a master closet that is bigger than my first apartment.

What is SCHOOL+HOUSE? It’s part traditional open house, and part meet-and-greet with the folks that can tell you everything you need to know about the schools that feed into Midway Hollow. In this case, three elementary schools (Walnut Hill Elementary, Withers Elementary, and Foster Elementary) and two feeder patterns (Thomas Jefferson and W.T. White) serve this gigantic neighborhood that is bordered by Midway Road, Walnut Hill Lane, Marsh Lane, and Northwest Highway. We’re bringing parents, principals, and other Dallas ISD folks in to answer all your questions. And, of course, Realtors will be on hand to talk inventory and needs as well.

Why do we do this? Because some of the best knowledge about schools comes from the parents and principals who are there every day. They’re informed, involved, and ready to give anyone the ins and outs of sending your child to the schools in the neighborhood.

Keep an eye out next week for a look at this gorgeous house Realtor Karen Cuskey has found for us, and in the meantime, pencil our next SCHOOL+HOUSE in on your calendar. You don’t want to miss this.

H-E-B

DFW Internet was set ablaze yesterday after H-E-B announced the purchase of six Sun Fresh Market stores in the area. (Photo by Dave Stone/Flickr)

Monday afternoon, the Dallas-area Internet exploded: It wasn’t just a rumor, the long-desired H-E-B grocery store chain had bought up six Sunfresh Market sites — four in Dallas, one in Grapevine, and one in McKinney.

Interestingly enough, it seems like the drumbeat for expansion may have been happening even earlier than this, judging from this thread in Retail Watchers.

As neighborhood NextDoor pages and Facebook groups filled with the requisite 15 reposts of the same Dallas Morning News article, people began to express their joy at the possibility of the area finally getting the stores that are ubiquitous in Central and Southeast Texas, but not so much around here. They also began to guess about which it would be – Central Market, or H-E-B. (more…)

There are many neighborhoods that are home to “hidden gems” of Dallas ISD – schools that don’t get the attention of their more popular siblings, but have the same programs and successes. (Photo: courtesy Dallas ISD)

I just spent two days fielding queries about neighborhood schools from folks that just moved into my neighborhood. I’m about to tell our readers the same thing I’ve told them: You always hear about the same schools because they’re great schools, and you may feel like you must buy a home in the attendance zones for those schools, despite the low inventory. But often, there are great schools with the same programs (who just haven’t had those programs as long) sitting right under your nose. In fact, there’s still some time to get into your family’s next home near one of these great undiscovered or under-discussed schools before the school year starts.

So I’m thrilled that Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate asked me to write about the schools that are just as awesome, but are less well-known. Keep in mind, this is just a small sampling — there are schools all over the Dallas Independent School District that have amazing programs that are not the usual suspects. (more…)

3965 Boca Bay a

We’ve taken it upon ourselves to point out examples of bad real estate photos and poorly presented houses for sale.

Today, our Thursday Three Hundred is the exact opposite, a shining example of making the very best of its assets through staging and photography.

The home at 3965 Boca Bay Dr. in Northwest Dallas’ Glen Cove is an updated ranch with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, two living areas, and 2,232 square feet, built in 1965. Glen Cove is in the larger neighborhood of Glen Meadow Estates, north of Midway Hollow, a family-friendly, established area with mature trees and a sense of community. Homeowners in this area can be a member of the Glen Cove Swim Club.

It will be listed tomorrow by Beth Nunneley Mazziotta with Nunneley Real Estate for $330,000.

4017 Park a

We’ve found the cutest cottage for our Tuesday Two Hundred at 4017 Park Ln. It’s located in Midway Hollow’s Glenridge Estates neighborhood, near Walnut Hill Lane and Midway Road. This is a 2-1 with 1,126 square feet, built in 1952, and the renovations are absolutely wonderful.

It was listed March 11 by Amy Malooley with Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate for $295,000.
