Cozy cottage. Estate-size lot. Garden setting. Heavily-treed. Water features. No, it’s not for sale, but you can tour it and support a great cause, too.

Equest, the wonderful organization that brings hope and healing to children and adults with special needs through horse-assisted activities and therapies, is hosting a cottage and garden tour open to the public April 6 – 8 at The Shire of Preston Hollow, an enchanting Tolkien-inspired venue you’ll have to see to believe. The event will include live music, drinks, bites, and fashions and accessories available for purchase. It’s a spring event you won’t want to miss.

A homeowner inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s tales of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings created the whimsical backyard park, complete with a drawbridge, which allows safe passage over a moat that guards a Hobbit-sized cottage and garden. Set under a cathedral of tree branches, it’s not hard to imagine dragons, fairies, orcs, and wizards making mischief in this wooded kingdom hidden in the heart of Preston Hollow.

Admission to an indoor/outdoor tour of the cottage and garden will be open to adults, 21 and up; a minimum donation of $20 is requested to benefit Equest. Included in the event will be drinks, bites, and an opportunity to shop designer fashions, accessories, and other luxury items from Lily of the West (represented by designer Lily Falk herself in attendance on site for custom measurement and design,) Hari Jewels, and the Origins of Santa Fe (named “One of the Top Ten Best Boutiques in the World,” by Frommer’s Guide to Shopping,) with a percentage of sales going to benefit the cause.

Now in its 35th year, Equest provides equine-facilitated activities, therapies, and counseling to children and adults with physical, cognitive, sensory, coping and learning disabilities, including veterans with adjustment challenges. Services provided include physical and occupational therapy, equine-facilitated counseling, therapeutic carriage driving, therapeutic horsemanship, and competition. The organization is one of the largest such programs in the country, serving more than 1,200 clients annually, and was named “2015 Non-Profit of the Year” by CNM Connect.
