By the time Virginia Cook Realtors officially shut down this week, the vast majority of agents from the firm’s six locations had already found new homes.  Many of them were hesitant to talk about the experience out of respect for their former boss. Those who did generally shared the sentiment that they were saddened by the company’s demise but also grateful to find new firms that fit their personalities and business goals.

When Virginia Cook’s closure plans were initially revealed, search committees were formed at the Forest Lane and Park Cities offices to help agents decide where to go next. Representatives from multiple firms were then brought in to make their pitches.

Local agent Selden Tual joined The Standard Real Estate. He said that he was impressed with how The Standard is embracing openness and “pushing the envelope” in the market. He added that the brokerage’s long-term vision of using technology to make the market better for consumers and agents aligned with his.

“I think getting to work with people that you know and trust was something that I was really interested in,” Tual said. “That’s the kind of culture that I want to be around and I’m excited to contribute.”

Tual hails from Memphis, but moved to Dallas about a decade ago. After dabbling in music while in college, he worked in the service industry for a time but could not decide where to go from there.  Some of his colleagues had mentioned going into real estate so he decided to give that a try.  He hasn’t looked back since.

Barbara Novotny was named the new managing director at Standard Real Estate, the Dallas-based brokerage founded by Zach De Bernardi last year.

Novotny has worn a variety of hats in Dallas real estate. She began as an agent at Ebby Halliday for three years before moving to Nathan Grace, where she served as the firm’s director of business growth. She considers herself a fixer who enjoys helping agents. The best compliment she every received was when a former colleague called her “Siri.”

“I’m really passionate about this because I’ve been on the other side,” Novotny said. “I believe in services like how can I help you grow?  How can I take your strengths and help with your weaknesses to take the pressure off of you?”

The Standard’s COO Logan Nichols (left) and founder Zach De Bernardi hope partnering with Amazon will help grow their firm’s brand.

The Standard Real Estate announced a new partnership with Amazon to create a custom digital store. Under the setup, clients will have new options for purchasing home necessities and furniture.

“We are focusing on making the best of technology and being forward thinking,” founder and chief executive officer Zach De Bernardi said. “Amazon is everywhere so it makes sense for us to try and work with one of the bigger brands. It’s just one more added benefit that we can use to help our clients.”

De Bernardi said he was inspired after seeing similar programs implemented at two New York boutique real estate firms. He believes that partnering with Amazon will help build his company’s brand and help its agents better serve clients.
