Malone Cliff

No really, this is the view from this gorgeous Malone Cliff View home.

The thing about a Greico Modern Home is that you would be pleased as punch to live in one because they’re unique, they’re gorgeous, and they’re built to last. But this Greico home on Malone Cliff View punctuates that good feeling with a view that you’ll never tire of seeing.

Arguably one of Dallas’ best-kept secrets when it comes to neighborhoods, Malone Cliff homes are generally perched at the optimal spots for stunning views of the Dallas skyline, and this home at 1905 Malone Cliff View is no exception.

If you think the view from the pool at the Belmont Hotel was great, try the view from above the Belmont. (more…)

We regret to inform our community of the passing of Tom Greico, a Dallas Builders Association Honored Life Director, a CandysDirt preferred builder and founding partner of this website, an eclectic Dallas figure, and a brilliant home builder who pioneered modern vision in many Dallas neighborhoods when most of us were just learning what transitional meant.

As Phil Crone, Executive Officer of the Dallas Builder’s Association wrote, “Because Tom Greico brought light to every room he entered, his passing is especially difficult to convey.”

It is particularly difficult for us here at CandysDirt.com. I have personally known Tom Greico for years, meeting him early in my career as a real estate reporter. I toured his first homes in Midway Hollow and East Dallas, and heard him describe what he was creating with a passion few home builders possess, probably due to the fact that he was both an architect as well as a homebuilder. There was a methodology to every angle, and nothing was impossible.  Tom had a zest for living and for life, which was translated into his homes. He was also one of the most gracious men you could ever meet. He was naturally happy and brought out the best not just in, but for, everyone he was around.

The truth is, Tom loved designing and building homes more than anything. He was a 1983 graduate of the school of Architecture at the University of Texas.

I’m a longtime admirer of Tom Greico’s designs. This CandysDirt.com Approved Builder is known for his modern homes, which have a signature style. Apparently, I’m not alone.

Tom Greico has a fan club, a following,” says Janelle Alcantara, the listing agent for this Greico-designed home at 3773 Seguin, our High Caliber Home of the Week presented by Lisa Peters of Caliber Home Loans.

Though Greico has built many custom homes in many locations and in a variety of sizes, he does not build spec homes. He, however, designed this gorgeous Northwest Dallas house, which was built by David St. Germain of Freestyle Custom Homes. It has all of the design sensibilities you’d expect from a Greico-designed home, and some little extras.

Next weekend’s White Rock Home Tour will take you through some of the most fabulous modern properties throughout East Dallas, but we’re going to admit to having a favorite. We’ve watched Tom Greico and his talented team build this beauty on Easton Road from foundation to framing to finish-out and we have been smitten since Day One.

Could this be our favorite Greico Modern Home?

“The Easton Home was a fun project to be involved in because of the freedom the owners’ property provided,” Greico told us. ” The basic design philosophy was to create a home with a simple footprint that was easy and affordable to build, while taking full advantage of the heavily wooded  property.

That’s what’s truly amazing about this modern home that sits on a rather busy street — it’s set back from the road plenty, but thanks to the mature trees that remain on the lot, it doesn’t feel loud or obnoxious. It’s actually pretty serene.

“The design we settled on allows the  public living areas of the home to be as open, accessible and transparent to the property as possible,” Greico added. “The overlapping design of the upper level provided for a large protected exterior space for outdoor entertaining at the same time, and allowed us to achieve the owners’ desire to have their sleeping quarters capture the essence of camping as if in a tree house.”

That’s what it is! It’s like a tree house, but with a master bath straight out of architectural digest. But we had to ask Greico the hard question: What’s your favorite space in the house?

“It’s hard to isolate my favorite space in the home, but I’d say it has to to be the great room with its glass walls, wood decks, opening on to green grass and large trees on either side,” he said. “It’s a very cool space.”

We agree! Of course, we couldn’t stop at picking the builder’s brain. We also wanted to ask homeowners Ashley and Webster Miller about this gorgeous property, too! We have an exclusive Q&A with them after the jump.

And if you haven’t picked up your tickets for the 11th annual White Rock Home Tour yet, you better hurry. Besides this brand new custom build by Greico Modern Homes, you can tour a Frank Welch design on Lawther, a midcentury gem from Thomas Scott Dean, and even a Ju-Nel on April 23 and 24. All ticket proceeds benefit Victor H. Hexter Elementary. Buy your tickets on the White Rock Home Tour website today.

Feeling lucky? Stay tuned to CandysDirt.com for your chance to win a pair of tickets to the White Rock Home Tour!

It’s hard to remember what life was like before Houzz.

Clients bringing in huge folders of magazine clippings, trying to describe what they wanted their new home to look like, wanting this but not that, and always saying that “I’ll know what I want when I see it.”

Thanks to Houzz, those days are just an unhappy memory and now clients can browse through millions of photos and ideabooks on the site and share exactly what they are looking for.

2016 homebuilding trends

“Barnitecture” is one of the big 2016 homebuilding trends, with elements like rough-hewn ceiling beams mixed with more contemporary elements. This home is by LRO Residential. Photo: Shoot2Sell Photography

The 2015 real estate market in Dallas-Fort Worth went down in the books as the best in three decades, and year-end housing construction numbers placed Dallas as one of the country’s top building markets.

North Texas is headquarters to some enormously talented (and busy!) builders. We’ve asked the best and brightest among them to tell us their predictions for 2016 homebuilding trends. They’ve also given us some gorgeous photos that illustrate how those trends are showing up in their work. You won’t want to miss this!
