Durham Builders

East Dallas has a new modern enclave near White Rock Lake, with three houses built, and four more planned.

The Santa Barbara development, near Mockingbird Lane and W. Lawther Drive, creates a style that fuses native Texas materials with California-style architecture. The result is marvelous, something that’s being called “this-century modern.”

“When we were doing the original modeling, we were doing was more Midcentury Modern [style], but I felt  a Texas modern house would go better with the community,” said builder Miles Durham of Durham Builders. “It seems like the people around the lake and in Lakewood are open to this type and style of house.”

Durham’s father, Robert Durham, is the architect for the Santa Barbara development.

“He has modernist influences, and Frank Lloyd Wright,” Miles said. “He does all of the floorplan layouts and all of the elevations, I do all the finish selections and more. We’ve done a lot of houses and we work well together.”Durham Builders

The Santa Barbara houses are priced between $810K and $825K, and are around 3,200 square feet with four or five bedrooms. The designs include an abundance of large windows, open floorplans, fireplaces clad in Carrera Marble and wood, designer tile, concrete floors, and chef’s kitchens with high-end KitchenAid stainless steel appliances and Silestone quartz countertops.

“It’s extremely affordable by Lakewood standards, and that was important to us,” Miles said.

The photos throughout this post are of the home at 6924 Santa Barbara Dr. listed by Jennifer Baldwin with Clay Stapp + Co. for $810,000. It is a 5-4 with two living areas and 3,137 square feet.

DFW open houses

The Jacobean Tudor at 6243 La Vista Dr. in East Dallas is a rare find, and one of five DFW open houses we’re featuring this week.

Open houses are a weekend tradition, and with a glorious weather forecast for Saturday and Sunday (highs in the low 80s, lows in the mid-50s!), it’s a stellar opportunity to get out and about.

By our count, there are around 50 listed open houses on realtor.com just in Dallas and nearby suburbs. We’ve picked five to feature here, based on their size, location, amenities, and unusual factors (the one pictured above is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places).

The prices range from the $375K to $1.469 million, and we’ve got houses all over Dallas and University Park. Let us know what you think!

man caves

The 19,500-square-foot house at 4105 Hartlee Field Rd. in Denton has multiple man caves. All photos: Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty.

Man caves provide a place for dudes to recharge their batteries after a long day on their jobs, and a space where they can hang out with buddies, family, or alone. Many people say that men have a basic, primal, instinctual need to have a space to call their own, and the man cave fulfills that. They come in all shapes and sizes—sometimes, it’s a shed in the backyard. Other times, it’s a super posh spot in the house.

The folks over at Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty have six houses on the market now that take man caves to their highest level. These ultra luxury digs showcase man caves in all their glory, from a full basketball court with airstrip outside, to a ten-car garage created to be the ultimate relaxation space, too.

Read on to get inspiration for your man cave.

Just north of Forest and west of Hillcrest is Preston Brook Estates. It’s a quiet little area, carved seemingly from a forest with its mature trees on typical suburban lots. The location is outstanding — you’re close to shopping all along Preston Road, you’re close to North Central Expressway, and you’re about 25 minutes from downtown.

The neighborhood is populated with 50s and 60s-era traditional ranches, which is a great home for those interested in remodeling. Pretty much anything goes with these houses (within the bounds of good taste, of course).

That’s why I like 11820 Hampstead marketed by Sylvia Scott of Allie Beth Allman & Associates. So much of the home has been remodeled, and what’s been done recently is absolutely perfect.  What original work has been kept — the gorgeous fireplaces — were definitely keepers. I love the copious living area (three rooms total!) and the two dining areas. The kitchen is adorable, too. I love the dark cabinets!

In total, this home is 3,154 square feet and priced at $575,000. You get three bedrooms and three baths, too, along with a great backyard that looks like the perfect spot to relax in no matter what the weather throws your way.

My only nit I’m going to pick is the master bath. It’s outdated, which the brass fixtures make painfully obvious. This is a pretty easy fix, though, so don’t let that put you off from this cutie!
