When I think about contemporary architecture, I gravitate to dramatic lines and angles, creative use of light, and bright accent colors. So when I saw this brand new listing from Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate’s Ralf Baumann, I had to share it with you because it not only has a wonderful contemporary feel, but the use of light and the wide-open spaces in this immense Oak Lawn new build will definitely leave and impression.

The home is located right in the thick of Oak Lawn, and sports incredible floor-to-ceiling windows and a floating staircase that definitely brings the “WOW” factor. With 22-foot ceilings, drama is a priority, not an afterthought.

When some people think of contemporary homes, they think of a stark white box with a white interior — perhaps like the Rachofsky Residence by Richard Meier in Preston Hollow – essentially an art-museum-house-hybrid.

Enrique Montenegro, a principal at SHM Architects, says contemporary is really anything that’s not traditional in architecture, but it’s not necessarily a “classic white box.”

“Contemporary doesn’t have to be cold,” he says.

CandysDirt.com sat down with Enrique Montenegro of Dallas-based SHM Architects to discuss how to design a contemporary home that feels warm and comfortable.

CandysDirt: Let’s start with the criticisms. What are the stereotypes people have of contemporary-style homes?

Enrique Montenegro: Everybody’s got a different idea of what contemporary means. Clean lines is a term that people use a lot when they’re referring to contemporary homes, where everything’s super straight, with minimal details, and very crisp.

But we’ve all been in these kinds of spaces where you feel like you can’t put your feet up. They are rooms full of furniture that make you feel like you’ve got to sit straight up. The way the space is furnished and how the walls are finished can make it feel very cold and too formal. (more…)

Everything is bigger, and definitely more glamorous, in Texas. This iconic Dallas contemporary is proof of that. In fact, it puts the “star” in Lone Star State because, in the 1980s, scenes of RoboCop were filmed here. Since then, its stardom has continued by appearing in a myriad of other TV shows, books, and magazines. Gazing at its pristine white exteriors, clean lines, and bright spaces, it’s easy to see why so many people have been drawn to it and surely will continue to be now that is on the market.

Before there ever was a pink mansion on Douglas Avenue, Mary Kay Ash and her husband, Mel Ash, conscripted modernist architect Frank L. Meier to design a home for them. The site — a private, picturesque lake in Preston Hollow — was the perfect place to craft reality from a dream.

That dream was for a welcoming, beautiful structure that was perfect for hosting all sorts of gatherings — a well-rounded home. Literally.

In fact, that’s what makes 7246 Lupton Circle — our High Caliber Home of the Week presented by Lisa Peters at Caliber Home Loans — so very unique. Its design takes every advantage of the lake and lot, with a circular design that flows perfectly from one room to the next. Add in the delicious light from the glass-domed ceiling in the center of the home, and you have magic in the making.

The home at 2906 Shadow Drive in Arlington is modern architecture at its finest. (Photos: Matt Ross, MLS Images)

The home at 2906 Shadow Drive has to be the winner of the “2017 CandysDirt.com Most Interesting Home Award.”

OK, so I made up that award, but if it did exist, I would give it to this work of art in a split second. I have to be honest: When I received a request to feature a home in Arlington, I did not expect to find a spectacular home in the modernist style of architecture.
