Three Things Home Inspectors Wish You Knew
Share News:

When you see the same problems in houses over and over again, you start to wonder why everybody doesn’t know the things you do. What are they, dumb? That’s a word we’re not allowed to use in my house. I tell my girls (who are 8 and 10) that answers are only easy if you already know them. And I tell the home inspectors the same thing. Homeowners aren’t dumb, they’re just not home inspectors.
So, what do you want them to know?
Don’t Mess With Electricity
It doesn’t seem to matter how many times we say it, some people are always going to DIY electrical work rather than calling a professional electrician. If you don’t have a license or training, don’t mess with electricity beyond the basics! You’ll end up with issues like this accident waiting to happen. Who leaves a live wire just hanging on a rafter? Someone who doesn’t understand electricity, that’s who.
Look Before You Screw
Whether it’s hanging a picture on the wall or installing your garage door opener, you should know what’s behind the wall before you drill into it. Use a stud-finder to locate the appropriate spot to place your screws. Don’t just start drilling willy-nilly.
Check Out Your Ducts
Now this is something you can DIY.
People get in their attics and shove ductwork around like it doesn’t have a job to do, and it ends up getting twisted, tangled, or compressed. This makes it so that air can’t flow through it properly. In this video, Inspector Travis shows just how much difference a compressed duct can make to the temperature in your home. If you notice that certain rooms aren’t cooling properly, take a look at your ducts to make sure they’re laid out unconstricted.
These are just three things home inspectors wish you knew. If you have questions about your house, you can get a seasonal home inspection any time to find out what’s going on with all your home systems.
