There is something about Hollywood Heights that draws people who are looking for a place to put down roots and start their families. They don’t just want a house; they want a place to call home. This classic Craftsman bungalow is an example of what I mean. It’s been in the same family’s hands for three decades.
It was built in 1926, making it a part of the first group of homes in a neighborhood that celebrated its 100th birthday in 2024. My deep dive into the Dallas Library archives unearthed some interesting facts about this Craftsman bungalow, adding to its historical charm.

In 1931, it was featured in an advertisement as a four-bedroom apartment. In 1933, it was a single-family home owned by Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Aven. Their daughter was married here in September of that year, and I found this sweet description of the wedding.
The ceremony was read before an altar of palm and ferns and pink and white roses. Bowls of roses were used in the dining room.
In 1939, a room was rented out with a connecting bath and private entrance. This was common practice in Hollywood Heights, and why you see homes with either two front door entrances, and often with one on the left-hand driveway side or on the back. Sometimes owners would rent out their front and back bedrooms, an excellent way to offset that mortgage, and still a great idea today!

The Craftsman bungalow is one of the few indigenous American styles. Inspired by two California brothers, Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene. Their popularity resulted in pattern books that offered plans for Craftsman bungalows, some even came with pre-cut packages of lumber and instructions for local laborers.

This Craftsman bungalow is picture-perfect with 1,376 square feet, three bedrooms, and two bathrooms. The living room features a vaulted ceiling, beautiful hardwood floors, and original built-in, concealed bookcases flanking the fireplace. I’m pretty sure the Avens’ daughter must have taken her vows in front of this fireplace.
There are original French doors to the formal dining room, and the kitchen has been updated to be nicely reminiscent of the home’s era.

Remember, the third bedroom has that original private exterior entrance. If you need a great home office, this is the space. However, remember that you can also rent out a room and pay down your mortgage quickly.

This Craftsman bungalow has a large yard for Hollywood Heights, and yes, the grass has been color corrected because it’s summer in Texas, but this is how it looks turfed.
Hollywood Heights is a conservation district, which is one of many reasons it’s so sought after. No big white box will be going up next door. It’s also zoned to Lakewood Elementary, which is an enormous plus, and you can be at White Rock Lake in under ten minutes. Of course, there are the legendary holiday parties and Easter Parades Hollywood Heights is known for, which simply add to the many reasons people want to live here.

This is indeed a place to call home for a lifetime.
Paragon’s Britt Lopez has this adorable Craftsman bungalow at 609 Valencia St. available for $560,000. This is absolutely the best buy in July, and you won’t find a better deal in Hollywood Heights.
