Preservation Dallas Shines a Spotlight on Historic Gems at Annual Awards on Tuesday

It takes a village to keep our built heritage intact, and every year, Preservation Dallas honors that village at its Annual Preservation Achievement Awards Ceremony.

This year marks the 26th when a small group of intrepid volunteers and an even smaller staff have worked diligently to ensure those individuals and companies that preserve our heritage are recognized for their hard work.

When you consider what goes into preserving historic homes and buildings, it’s frankly a rather heroic feat. Someone first has to see the value of a structure. Then, they have to convince others of that value. But the value isn’t just sentimental or historical. There are substantial tax incentives for preservation, but city or even state leaders often need reminders of that.

It can be a long process to research history, fill out official forms, appear before boards, and bring the heartfelt story of our historic architecture to the appropriate ears. However, in every single instance, it’s worth it.

Preservation takes many forms. Of course, there is the complete restoration of a structure, but there is also rehabilitation, reconstruction, and enhancement of historic buildings and neighborhoods.

Can you contemplate life without The Swiss Avenue Historic District? If it were not for one woman, Virginia Savage McAlester, who gathered her like-minded friends to save the street from almost certain multi-family development, we may not have this treasure to enjoy today.

Can you really imagine Dallas without Swiss Avenue, Junius Heights, Winnetka Heights, or any of the many historic and conservation districts that give our city such distinctive character? What about Fair Park, the Majestic Theater, the Adolphus Hotel, and the Statler Hotel? These neighborhoods and buildings define our city.

Preservation extends to every size and shape of building imaginable. Historic preservation defines the look, feel, and character of Dallas. Our legacy architecture connects us to our past, and when it is prioritized and rescued, it adapts us to our future.

This year, the Preservation Dallas Achievement Awards will be held in the iconic Longhorn Ballroom, which itself is a preservation success story. Owner Edwin Cabanis, who has a true heart for preservation, brought the iconic The Longhorn Ballroom back to life. Built in 1950 for country music legend Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys, the venue has hosted everyone from Sid Vicious to Patsy Cline and, with Cabaniss’s foresight, will continue to entertain generations to come.

So put your boots on and scoot on out to The Longhorn Ballroom next Tuesday to honor some of the most dedicated people in the Dallas preservation community.
