Designer Kyle Knight Takes a Timeless Mediterranean to the Next Level

When you think a house cannot get any better, think again. I featured this timeless Mediterranean in 2017, and we were all over the moon about it then. I honestly did not think it could get any better. But along came interior designer Kyle Knight, who, with her unique vision and expertise, took this house to a whole new level.

Knight started with a beautiful canvas by SHM Architects principal David Stocker. Timeless Mediterranean is Stocker in his element, and he always knocks it out of the park. Located on a cul-de-sac, Stocker had over an acre backing up to Bachman Creek to site the house. He created a 12,842-square-foot luxury home that I’ve described as completely livable. Few architects bring light into a home in such a seamless way as Stocker does. That’s important to remember as we glide through this one because light means you can take some dramatic opportunities.
Let’s start at the beginning. The drive up is impressive yet welcoming. Once inside, the striking great room sets the tone with an extraordinary timbered ceiling and twin limestone fireplaces anchoring each end of the room. Front and rear loggias are accessible through massive glass doors. This is the light and bright entertainment area everyone wants, and Knight treated it to soothing colors that complement the views.

The dining room’s large arched window overlooks the front yard. Knight excels at the unique, which is evidenced by Paul Ferrante’s water lilies light fixture and a sideboard by Ercole Home that features their signature hand-cut, three-dimensional glass mosaic blossoms. The subtle pink lacquer ceiling is another beautiful touch.

Head down the gallery hallway to a walk-up bar and the stunning private study, and you will see what I mean about taking dramatic opportunities in a home that offers a lot of light. Knight had a Fine Paints of Europe custom green mixed for the study. The deep color creates a cozy ambiance even with the vaulted ceiling, and the custom brass and walnut bookcases are the perfect finishing touch.

The bathrooms all received makeovers with custom white oak cabinetry, gorgeous tile, and creative wallpapers. While we have a lot of ideas to adopt from the interior design of this timeless Mediterranean, the blue bathroom is especially notable. The marble mosaic floor tile was also used as trim at the top of the wall. Classic but fun!

My favorite transformation has to be the principal suite. If anything can convince you color is important, it’s this room.
“I love how the primary bedroom played out,” Knight said. “It’s not often we have a client that lets us go dark, moody, and cozy. It has a really nice feeling.”
Knight used Gregorius Pineo grasscloth in the bedroom and private sitting area and continued the wood ceiling as well. It creates a lovely cohesiveness, and again, we see how well dramatic color works.

Five more en suite bedrooms are upstairs. One features a large terrace, and another has an outdoor staircase — perfect for private guest quarters. On this level, there is also a large living area with a beverage center and a spacious laundry-craft room.
The basement level offers another impressive transformation. Knight banished the red and gold and reinvented the media room with custom furniture and soft, soothing colors for a decidedly more elegant feel. This level features a golf/sports simulator room, a wet bar, a gym, and an impressive wine cellar. Don’t worry, there’s an elevator that serves all three floors.

Stocker designed the home to wrap around the infinity edge pool, creating a perfect and private atmosphere for outdoor entertaining. Harold Leidner did the landscaping and added lighting to the trees over the creek. It’s absolutely gorgeous in the evening.

This timeless Mediterranean serves as a perfect example of how an interior designer, allowed to take advantage of opportunities, can make an enormous difference in a home.
