From Bridges to Backsplashes: Candy Evans Finds the Fun in Remodeling

The rock that moved the ball: Candy finding her dream slab at Texas Counter Fitters.

Now I remember all the fabulous reasons we’re moving. Hint: about 200,000 of them are at Texas Counter Fitters.

Never mind that I’m exhausted from mortgage financing, bridge loans, interest rates (LOWER THEM ALREADY!!!), purging, and packing. Some days, I feel I could just pack and ship myself off to Florida.

Instead, I have to experience the DARK SIDE of real estate, the realities. Kind of like death, it gets us all. Real estate is not always about looking at pretty pictures. Hello, that’s why CandysDirt.com exists! But Texas Counter Fitters took me back to the fun part of buying a home — the looking, the remodeling, the decorating!

I confess, I’m now a regular on Perigold. And oh the furniture sites I’m scrolling! When we built our current home 25 years ago, I had to trek down to the Design District or hit staples like Covin’s and Gabberts for inspiration (Rutherford’s, by the way, is still open with fabulous pieces, as is IBB Design and Kathy Adams Furniture. More on them later).

Now? It’s all on my handy-dandy devices. In fact, I’m buying a chandelier as I type this.

But nothing compares to that first time I walked into Texas Counter Fitters’ Richardson showroom. Talk about a shot of adrenaline.

It was the moment I realized that the home we’re buying doesn’t have to stay stuck in the past. With fresh stone, every surface could be reimagined, refined, and given the ultimate facelift. Think Fadi Constantine or Rod Roderick — but for houses.

Why did it start here? Because the stone in your home literally sets the tone for everything else.

At 25 years old — the same age as the one we’re selling — our new place has great bones beneath some sagging skin. She’s ready for a refresh. And while I’ll always be a fan of building from scratch (our custom build was a dream) in Dallas today, if you want to live in the loop or even south of 121, remodeling is the way forward. The tide has turned.

Take a peek at my inspiration, then go see what 200,000 slabs can do for you at Texas Counter Fitters.
