Preservation Dallas has named Greg Johnston as their new board president. Johnston brings a wealth of experience in historic preservation and a strong working knowledge of the organization. He has been a board member and treasurer for Preservation and is a long-term member of the Landmark Commission’s Swiss Avenue Historic District Task Force and, more recently, the South Boulevard Park Row Task Force.

Johnston is a principal at Treanor, a national architecture, planning, and design firm with expertise in a wide variety of fields, including historic preservation, healthcare, and education.
As an accomplished preservation architect with over 29 years of experience in a diverse variety of projects, he brings an impressive depth of knowledge to Preservation Dallas.
His excellent project management and communications skills are a great asset to the historic preservation community. I sat down with Johnston to gain some insight into his plans as president of Preservation Dallas.

Candys Dirt: Congratulations on your new role! Are you excited?
Greg Johnston: Yes, it’s exciting and a little daunting!
CD: First of all, I’m sure inquiring minds want to know if you live in a historic home.
GJ: Yes! I live in a 1966 ranch, and I’ve been renovating it. It’s been important to me to maintain the historic character of it.
CD: I know it’s a broad question, but could you please let us know some things you hope to accomplish during your tenure at Preservation Dallas?
Greg Johnston: I hope to continue the work of past presidents Ron Siebler and Victoria Clow to broaden the membership of Preservation Dallas. We’d like to reinvigorate the young professionals. I have always felt that there could be more opportunity there, especially with the 1960s and ’70s neighborhoods they are drawn to, which are now becoming historic.

CD: What are you hoping to focus on first?
GJ: I think advocacy is important, especially with the recent proposals to get rid of single-family zoning, which would be detrimental to so many of our intact neighborhoods. Our Executive Director, Sarah Crain, has many wonderful new ideas, and I want to nurture them, so I’d say that is my first focus.
Preservation Dallas is honored to welcome Greg Johnston as the new Board President of Preservation Dallas. With nearly 30 years of experience in historic preservation, ranging from the Ambassador Hotel in Tulsa to landmark Dallas structures such as the Old Red Courthouse and the Dallas County Administration Building (formerly the School Book Depository), Greg brings unmatched expertise and passion to our mission. His past leadership roles, including Preservation Dallas Treasurer and as an advocate on key historic district task forces, have already made a profound impact on our Dallas community.
I look forward to partnering with Greg and drawing on his expertise as we guide the organization into its next chapter.Sarah Crain- Executive Director Preservation Dallas
