Mother's Advice

Because Mom is always right, this Mother’s Day we’re paying homage to mothers and grandmothers everywhere by acknowledging their sage advice.

If more people were heeding their mother’s advice, inspectors wouldn’t see some of the head-scratchers they find in peoples’ homes. Here are some examples:

Mom Tip #1: Always Read the Instructions

Now, if you caught the gist of what Inspector Alex is throwing down in this video, this not-so-handy homeowner’s failure to read the instructions here could cause an actual explosion.

That’s right, the TPR valve (which stands for temperature pressure relief valve) is the thing that keeps the water heater from generating too much heat or too much pressure. If you connect that valve back into the water heater, it’s eventually going to blow.

Mom Tip #2: Don’t Play With Fire

Over time, gas appliances wear down, just like this gas fireplace from the 1970’s.

It’s important to pay attention to the gas appliances in your home to make sure they are functioning properly and free of leaks. You may want to purchase a gas detector to occasionally test for leaks if you have older equipment in your home.

Mom Tip #3: Don’t Judge a Book By Its Cover

Just because the roof looks good from the street doesn’t mean it’s a good roof. This happens more than you’d think. #askahomeinspector #homeinspection #roof #roofing #homeinspector

Or maybe the advice should be “Cheaters never win, and winners never cheat.”

Even if the homeowner did this because they couldn’t afford to replace the whole roof and wanted the front to look nice, it’s still a bad idea. The whole roof would have had to be replaced to be acceptable for a warranty, so they haven’t added any value to a future owner other than curb appeal, and the functionality of the roof is what a smart homeowner should be concerned about (right, Mom?)

Children often think they know best, but when we grow up, we look back and realize that Mother’s advice was pretty good after all. Mom would tell us that home is where the heart is, so when you’re caring for yours, take another piece of sage wisdom (Mom Tip #4): Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For Help. Call a pro and get some expert home help when you need it.
