History is Alive and Well in This Classic Highland Park Home

This classic Highland Park home is an example of what I advise readers on an almost weekly basis. You do not have to tear down our historic architecture to have a home that functions for modern life. All you need is the right team, and boy, did this beautiful 1911 home have that.
The present owners purchased their classic Highland Park house in 2005, which is also a signal that a home works well for a family. When you stay put for almost 25 years, it means a house is serving its owners beautifully. Of course, they selected brilliant minds to ensure their home would stand for another century.

Bodron + Fruit, although best known for restoring Midcentury Modern homes, is just as adept at saving traditional homes. They have been instrumental in restoring the works of some of our best-known architects, including Philip Johnson, O’Neil Ford, and Frank Lloyd Wright.
Adding English Heritage Homes of Texas into the mix ensured a home design of comfort and sophistication while embracing its provenance.
To me, nothing surpasses a traditional floor plan. Having a separation of public and private spaces just feels right. When you enter this classic Highland Park home you have the expected grand entry flanked by the living room on one side and the dining on the other. Nothing updates a classic home and makes it feel more welcoming than color. If you are afraid of it on your walls, let this home be a lesson for you. Simply use it on your furniture. Both of these formal rooms make you want to linger for hours.

The family room offers just the right degree of separation from the kitchen and keeps the sense of tradition alive with a time-honored fireplace style. A wall of French doors opens to the large covered porch and overlooks the backyard and swimming pool.

Traditional homes were always built with the bedrooms on the second floor. This offers a superior level of privacy, and when your primary suite has a private loggia, you might find it hard to pry yourself away. There are three additional bedrooms on this level and a bonus room. Attic space was recovered to create a versatile third-floor room presently serving as an art studio, of course.

A home with guest house quarters is always the icing on the cake. This classic Highland Park home has a garage space that not only offers guest accommodation with a full bath and kitchen but also a pool bath.

Compass Realtor Michelle Wood has this classic Highland Park home at 3728 Maplewood Ave. available for $7.9 million.
This is absolute perfection. I LOVE the bold large scale wildlife fabric used on the sofa in the formal living room!
This beautiful home certainly amplifies the hospitality and warmth of its owners. The listing photographs capture their grand piano, which is located in an ideal living room inside corner, removed from windows, heat registers, and the fireplace. For optimal sound projection, the piano could be rotated 135 degrees clockwise, to position its bass side parallel to the wall, and its player facing ideally into the room.
I get it about the location of the piano but I can tell you as someone that has worked with a Feng Shui specialist for over 15 years, we have moved the piano into a location before that is optimal for Feng Shui but not for the piano. As my FS person said, when my son was little, “Do you want him to play or not?Because in the present location he won’t.” I never said a thing to him but a kid that never had to be asked to practice had stopped playing a couple of weeks prior to my consultation. I had the piano moved while he was at school. He walked in the door that day, went straight to it without a word and began to play. That led to admission to Booker T, a full undergrad scholarship in music to Frost at U of Miami and a half ride to New England Conservatory of Music for his graduate degree. That boy is now a professional pianist playing all over Dallas. Who knows what would have happened if I never moved that piano : )
Karen, Following your response I read about Feng Shui piano placement. Yasher koach (strength to you) for encouraging the early development of your son’s musical talent, and mazel tov on his well deserved success!. Hedda
