While we may have resolved to give up sweets for the new year, there’s one indulgence we can enjoy without guilt. Mocha Mousse, Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year (COTY), is a rich, decadent-yet-cozy brown that’s captivating the design world.
“It’s a beautiful color to look at. We think of tasting it and know it’s going to be wonderful on the tongue,” according to Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman. “It’s not just indulging ourselves and treating ourselves, which we deserve, but also the possibility of sharing it with others.”
While a shade of brown might be a surprising choice for COTY, it makes sense on myriad levels. Mocha Mousse is a warm, versatile hue that seamlessly enhances diverse design styles. It also has an organic quality that pays homage to nature.
So, what did the creative minds at Frisco-based IBB Design think about Pantone’s latest pick? According to a recent IG video, the overall vibe was definitely upbeat.

For starters, CEO Shay Geyer, a self-admitted color girl, is on board. Her take: “There’s no such thing as too much chocolate,” she said.
Other IBB staffers described the shade as glamorous, yummy, warm, and cozy. Another called it “a good grounding neutral.”
One word of caution. “There is a thing as too much brown in interiors,” said Geyer. Your best bet: Hire a designer to help you.”

For those ready to take the plunge, here’s how this trending hue can instantly make a room feel both grounded and sophisticated.
Start With a Neutral Base
According to architect Alyssa Anselmo, founder of Stockholm-based Studio Anva, the key to incorporating this year’s COTY is to treat it as a foundational earth tone.
“Start with your largest pieces — sofas, armchairs, or rugs — and let its neutral quality create visual breathing room for more vibrant accents,” she told Martha Stewart magazine.

The exclusive Joybird x Pantone collaboration embraces refined tranquility with fabrics that are aspirational and accessible. Upholstered pieces sport a fine knit velvet with a silk-like hand. Shop sofas, sectionals, chairs, and more.
Create a Tranquil Space
Give your bathroom a spa-like vibe with mocha towels, bath mats, and a shower curtain. Bring that same energy into your bedroom by switching out linens and drapery.

The Spoonflower x Pantone collection includes sheet sets, pillows, blankets, wallpaper, and curtains. And Society6, an artist-driven e-commerce retailer selling wall art, home decor, and accessories, features an eclectic mix of COTY merch.
Give Your Kitchen a Refresh
“It’s where we gather and make memories, so make it a space that feels cozy and special,” said Anselmo.
Mocha-colored walls, stone, or flooring will make any kitchen more inviting.
“Play around with shapes and coordinating tones. Consider a copper backsplash paired with rich walnut cabinets,” she added.
Paint It Brown
Shades of brown are the ultimate wall color for instant comfort and calm — exactly why so many paint companies are promoting earthy-toned shades. Case in point: Carmelized by Dunn Edwards, a warm terracotta reminiscent of sunbaked clay.

“In the current fast-paced, high-tech age, we find ourselves drawn to more saturated and timeless colors to create personal spaces that feel welcoming, stylish, and grounded,” according to Lauren Hoferkamp, Dunn Edwards’ lead color expert.
